HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2019-05-09, Page 34To mark Queen Victoria’s 200th
birthday, the committee supporting
the Van Egmond House/Museum is
field testing a new event honouring
skills, trades and items from the
Victorian era.
The Victorian Era Day will be
spearheaded by the President of the
committee, Herman Mooy of Blyth.
Aside from Mooy, local
craftspeople are putting forth their
best efforts, making the Seaforth-
area event one with a decidedly
northern Huron County flavour.
Set for May 19, the event happens
nearly 200 years after Queen
Victoria was born on May 24, 1819.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the
grounds around the historic Van
Egmond House, will offer
demonstrations of Victorian-era
activities like blacksmithing, canoe-
making, croquet, a sack race,
infantry tactics, tinsmithing, rug
hooking, badminton and leather
making.
Jennifer Triemstra-Johnston of
Blyth’s Pick a Posie is outfitting
Herman and his wife Marlene for the
coming event, and a local bale maker
will be on the grounds as well, Mooy
said.
“We’ve got a lot of local uptake on
it,” he said. “It’s generating a lot of
interest so far.”
The event will feature a Victorian
luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
($8 for adults and $5 for children
under 12). An afternoon tea will also
be served in the Van Egmond House.
Mooy, who credits much of the
success in planning the event to his
partner on the project Dave
Minhinnick, said that, depending on
weather co-operation, the event
could be a great chance to show off
the Van Egmond House and
potentially start a new tradition for
the site.
“Dave has been the backbone of
this, and he really took it on last
November,” Mooy said.
The event adds an earlier activity
for the committee, which usually
focuses on three existing events.
The committee’s typical
fundraisers include their spring and
summer breakfasts, June 9 and July
28, respectively, as well as Ciderfest
in September, which Mooy says is
popular for a lot of reasons, but the
apple fritters are one of the best-
sellers.
Using products from Mait-Side
Orchard in Brussels, Mooy says the
fritters are cut, battered and deep-
fried, and are one of the most
sought-after treats at the events.
The Van Egmond House is the
former residence of Colonel
Anthony Van Egmond, who,
alongside his sons, was responsible
for significant road works as the
Huron Tract was being groomed for
development.
Van Egmond was also part of the
1837 revolt in Upper Canada, and
died after contracting a fatal disease
while imprisoned for his role in the
uprising. Van Egmond protested his
arrest, claiming his innocence, until
his death.
