Home and Garden 2019
Blyth group’s spots added to local garden tour

walking and biking, as well as a
chance to watch butterflies in the
garden when in season.
Finally, garden number eight is the
Memory Garden. Located at the east
end of Drummond Street, much of
the garden has been planted or
erected in memory of those who
have passed away. The garden is
described as being a tranquil spot to
take in greenery and wildlife.
In Brussels, The Grays of Brussels
Bed and Breakfast has been added.
Located on Thomas Street in
Brussels, the garden is open by
appointment or chance and offers “a
traditional formal English garden
with boxwood hedges, statues,
annuals and perennials.” The garden
is number 11 on the map.
Rassman’s Funny Farm is another
new addition to the pamphlet.
Located near Listowel, the garden
features hostas as well as ornamental
trees and unique plants. Wildlife
includes ducks, geese and peacocks.
The farm is located at number 17 on
the map.
Finally, the Huron County
Museum and Huron Historic Gaol
have been added to the map for the
gardens at those two sites tended by
the Friends of the Museum.
Located at number 19 on the map,
the Huron County Museum features
a public vegetable garden
maintained by local volunteers. The
teaching garden brings volunteers in
for all phases of the garden from
planting to harvesting. It is located at
the corner of North and Trafalgar
Streets in Goderich.
The garden at the Gaol, stop 20 on
the map, focuses on historical
accuracy for the site, growing
vegetables and herbs from historic
gaol menus. The produce from the
garden is donated to Huron County
food banks. It is located at 181
Victoria Street North in Goderich.
An addition from previous years
that has worked very well,
Hamilton-Seeger said, is pairing the
pamphlet with local restaurants.
The map is split up into five areas:
Gardens of the Northwest, Gardens
of the Northeast, Gardens of the
South, Gardens of the East and
Gardens of the West Central. Four of
those five areas have restaurants tied
to them in the pamphlet that
Hamilton-Seeger says cater to the
kind of tourists who utilize the maps.
In the northwest, for example, the
Queens Bakery in Blyth is featured,
while in the south, Bayfield Berry
Farm is suggested.
Through partnerships like the
restaurants, as well as the Huron
County Planning Department which
helps with the creation of the map,
the program continues to be a
success, Hamilton-Seeger said.
The tour is ever-growing, she said,
as there are already three new
gardens scheduled for the next year
and likely more to come.

In memoriam
Three different green spaces maintained by the Blyth Friends of the Village have been added
to the Discover the Gardens of Huron Perth program this year: the Greenway Trail, part of the
Goderich-to-Guelph Rail Trail (G2G), which includes the village’s Butterfly Garden; the Blyth
Horticulture Park which was originally a church cemetery and the Memory Garden, above,
which is filled with memorial installations. (File photo)Read
