Home and Garden 2019 Friends of the Village of Blyth continue green work The Friends of the Village of Blyth have made great strides in the group’s mandate of bringing more people to the Greenway Trail with its recent Easter on the Trail event. The event, which brought out more than 50 children despite heavy rain, was held on the Greenway Trail on Easter weekend and Friends of the Village liaison Lissa Kolkman said the group has received praise for the event from numerous people. “We’ve had good feedback, especially focused on the Greenway Trail,” she said. “When comparing with other hunts, the feedback was that this took more time and encouraged the families to stay on the trail.” She said that people have also said that seeing the flora and fauna, including a beaver in the river, was a big hit with the children. The event was a success through the lens of the group’s mandate, Kolkman said, and that’s a good step forward for the organization. The Friends of the Village was formed several years ago after the Blyth Horticultural Society folded. The Friends group is less formal than the organization it replaced, requiring less bookkeeping and being able to focus more on the green spaces in Blyth, rather than administration. The group is responsible for many of the green spaces in North Huron, including three different gardens in Blyth. As for the rest of the year’s projects, Kolkman said that many of the projects that the group wants to undertake are on the back burner for the time being. Kolkman explained that, with changes in leadership at North Huron, both on the council and staff side, there are still some questions about what the group will be able to pursue. “We have plans with Horticulture Park [on Dinsley Street], but going ahead depends on North Huron [Council],” she said. “We have other initiatives that we’re looking into right now.” Kolkman said the group is remaining steady, as far as membership goes, and is always open to recruiting new members.
