The Citizen, 2019-05-09, Page 9THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 9, 2019. PAGE 9. Huron County Fire Chiefs are advising residents to contact them regarding any restrictions governing open air burning, before starting any fires or burning brush. “With spring outdoor cleanup starting, we know some folks choose to burn brush and yard debris on their property,” explained Huron County Fire Co-ordinator Shawn Edwards. Cleaning up debris and limiting the level of flammable vegetation surrounding your home is a good practice. But make sure the way you do it is safe – for you, your home, your neighbours and the surrounding area. A permit may be required with specific conditions for burning and can vary by municipality. Contact your local fire department or municipal office for details specific to your municipality. Open air burning can include the use of outdoor fireplaces and cooking fires not involving the use of a barbecue. Some outdoor appliances used are not recommended because there is potential for personal injury, property damage and increased risk of a grass fire. The Huron County Fire Chiefs encourage that whether in the backyard of your home, the cottage or a campground, make fire safety a priority. Open air burning, especially if left unattended, can become difficult to control and can result in a serious widespread fire. Athletes on the F.E. Madill School’s track and field team began their season with a competition at an early bird meet at St. James Secondary School in Guelph last week. Over 30 Madill team members competed in the large meet, achieving some promising results. Athletes on the Madill team earned 11 new personal-best performances as well as setting a new school benchmark, breaking an existing school record, and winning five first-place finishes. Abigail Kraayenbrink, running in the Junior Girls 1,500-metre race, broke the school record with a time of 4:57.33. Teammate Steven Schraa set a new school benchmark in the Junior Boys 1,500-metre race with his first-place time of 4:32.43. Ryan Jacklin, in his first year as a Senior Boy competitor, led the field in all three throwing events. Hanna Van Stuvenburg followed suit in the Senior Girls discus with a first place toss of 34.66 metres. In the jumping pits, Austin Eadie leaped 6.15 metres in long jump to lead the competition. The team travels next to Jacob Hespeler Secondary School in Cambridge on May 3 to compete. This meet is followed closely by an invitational at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School in Clinton on May 7. Conference championships are May 14-15 in Clinton and the Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association championships are set for May 23-24 in London. Burning?
