United Church gives underwear, socks to shelter
Continued from page 6
to think of the next crew coming and
support projects that reuse the plastic
we have already; perhaps even push
our governments to look to the long
term to use our money to make
plastic wood affordable and support
research that has worms digesting
plastic and producing useable dirt.
Oh yes, let me dream, but we can do
it if our role in life is to make the
world better when we leave.
As we age it’s good to learn
something new and make new
pathways in your brain. There are
many things to choose but the more
complicated it is the better for your
brain function. So if you can borrow
and search for a guitar you can learn
to play guitar or at least make new
pathways by calling 519-887-6336,
Riverside Funeral Home for details.
Brussels United Church like all
other churches support community.
Our way includes coins on the
offering plate each Sunday going to
the monthly cause. For April the
Women’s Shelter for Huron receives
the cash and to make things real and
rather interesting we collected socks
and underwear too. Sunday was
show and tell with clotheslines of
undies, all new and pretty, ready to
make life just a wee bit better for
folks at the shelter. The truth hung
from the lines; we have people in our
community who need basic things
like underwear.
As the offering was received, the
underwear theme of giving was quite
obvious to all. Good work folks, once
again, each little bit offered with
heart makes a big difference when we
work together for a common goal.
Goodbye Bob Smith. Bob’s
memorial service was held on
Monday for his brothers Jim, Don,
Rae and Doug and their families as
well as for the friends and
neighbours. Bob has called Brussels
home for his life and was seen as a
quiet, kind, steadfast and supportive
man who enjoyed a good visit. Bob
enjoyed people and food and we’ll
miss him out and about.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
It is so hard to know what to wear
everyday. Warm today, cold
tomorrow, then it’s wet and it even
snowed on the weekend. I have my
expected spring cold, probably
because of making the wrong choice
in clothing!
Signs of spring include bunches of
daffodils blooming along the sides
of the road, one farmer planted
spring grain, baling of corn stalks,
killdeers looking for a place to nest
and other birds gathering nesting
materials for a nest. And rain! Lots
of rain. Planting will certainly be put
on hold for another week or two.
Our condolences to Brenda and
Bryan Finlayson and Ken
Hesselwood and family on the
passing of Kay Hesselwood. She
will be missed by her extended
family and by her many friends of
the Blyth Ladies Auxiliary. Kay will
be remembered for her dedication to
the Branch, her delicious baked
goods, her smiling face selling
tickets at many events, her
attendance at craft shows, bazaars,
vendors markets and events around
Huron County. Our sympathies to
all.
The Brussels residents were
shocked to hear of the passing of
Bob Smith. Our condolences to his
family including his brothers James,
Donald, Rae and Douglas and their
families. Bob was a quiet fellow
who enjoyed attending many of the
community events in Brussels. He
worked at the United Church to
assist in setting up for events for
many years and being caretaker. We
had nice visits whenever he came
into the shop or the Legion. Our
sympathies to all.
The birthday ladies group of
Brussels celebrated the April
birthdays last week. The four
birthday ladies included Merle
Cousins, Betty McCutcheon, Jean
Davidson and Alice Marks.
Celebrating the milestones with the
ladies were Nora Stephenson, Marci
Bremner, Isabel Wheeler, Betty
Campbell, Lois McCutcheon, Rene
Richmond, Laura Barbour, Audrey
Cardiff, Betty Cardiff, Joan Bernard,
Cora Alcock, Dale Chesher, Dona
Knight, Esther McCutcheon, Sandra
Clark and Zoey Onn. The group
gathered at JR’s for a delicious
dinner and visit.
Mitch and Mama’s opened this
week in the former Cinnamon Jim’s
building. They offer soup and
sandwiches and coffee and baked
goods. Drop in and pick up a tasty
treat.
Congratulations to Fred and Heidi
McClure on becoming grandparents
for the third time. Son Darrell and
wife Lisa have welcomed a beautiful
baby girl they have named Nora, on
Easter morning. Congratulations to
the happy parents. The family lives
in Kitchener.
We send get-well wishes to Irene
Blake, who had surgery on her hand
this week. We hope she has a speedy
recovery.
We send get-well and be-home-
soon wishes to Stew Steiss as he is a
patent in Listowel Hospital. We hope
he is feeling better and back to his
normal self.
Reports are good that Gord Pryce
is coming along nicely since his
accident in mid-February. He has
been able to come home and we
hope he continues to improve.
We hope Jean Kirkby is settling in
at Huronview at this time. We hope
she enjoys meeting new and old
friends and visitors will help cheer
her along.
We send get-well wishes to
Murray Henderson who has had
heart surgery. We hope he makes a
full and quick recovery.
The first of many showers begin
this weekend with a shower for
Rosie Grobbink being held at the
home of Jane Zwep. Look for details
in the coming events.
Showers are being organized for
brides-to-be Melissa Glanville and
Abby McGavin to be held in May
and June. Watch for details.
People with teachers in their
families, students graduating from
teachers college, EAs or students at
school, are well aware of the
controversy between the provincial
government and the teachers’
unions.
Funding cuts will mean less of
everything; teachers, classes, special
needs, courses, support services,
coaches, materials to teach with and
more. But many may not realize that
MPP Lisa Thompson has said, that
public input is also part of the
decision making. If you have
concerns about the changes in
education, e-mail edulabfinance
@ontario.ca before May 31 to share
your concerns.
Birthdays in the month of April
will finish up with Avery Boven,
Dean Glanville, Derick Bachert,
Cody Terpstra, Graeme Craig, Paul
Humphries, Casey Bernard, Jessica
Fraser, Kelly Marks, Jenna Regele,
Kelsey Eckert, Marcy McCall
MacBain, Pat Parr, Donald Dalton,
Landon Gemmel, John Huether,
Dave Lewington and Joe Steffler.
Happy birthday to all.

A group of volunteers known simply as “The Underwear Fairies” decorated the sanctuary at
Brussels United Church on Sunday to show the congregation how their weekly donations help
out. The new underwear and socks on display were bought with funds from the collection plate
and will be donated to the Women’s Shelter of Huron. (Denny Scott photo)
