By Jo-Ann McDonald
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch began with the Lions Club
hosting its regular meeting. They
enjoyed a roast beef dinner prior to
the meeting. Helping with dinner
were Comrades Kathy Burkholder,
Judy Lee and Jo-Ann McDonald.
The Branch held the monthly
meeting and it was election of
officers. Special guests to conduct
elections included Present Zone
Commander, Keith Vanderhoek and
incoming Zone Commander Dennis
Schmidt. The nominating committee
announced the names of those
running and the successful Comrades
are President Jamie Mitchell; First
Vice, Andy Overholt; Second Vice,
Judy Lee; secretary, Sandra Brown;
treasurer, Nancy Bridge; executive
members, Lisa Glanville, Eric Ross,
Mabel Glanville, Deb Ross, Kathy
Burkholder and Nanci Ducharme;
Sergeant-at-Arms, Lisa Glanville.
The regular business was
conducted and reports from the
chairman were presented.
Membership as always is a concern.
The Branch has been trying to host
more functions for those of a
younger age, such as karaoke, the
spring lympix, trivia nights for the
crowd , but not many have been well
attended. If you have any
suggestions for events the Branch
could arrange, call the entertainment
committee chair, Lisa Glanville or
the Branch.
The Thursday night darts had 21
darters having a good night. There is
only one week left for the season and
it is May 2. They will enjoy fun,
food, prizes and lots of laughs. This
week the top team was Lisa
Glanville, Gord Jacklin and Ron
Schmidt; second, Ken VerBeek and
Jim Brown; high shots, Deb Burch
146, Ken 133 and Rhonda Davis,
117. The final skunk of the year was
earned by Deb Burch and Devon
Josling. They maybe can work on
doubling in during the summer.
Don’t forget to come out for the last
night before the summer break!
The ladies of the Brussels Walton
slo-pitch league met at the Legion on
Thursday evening to discuss the
upcoming ball season. There were
about 16 women representing the 11
teams in the league this year and
play will commence the Thursday
after the long weekend in May. The
ladies made their decisions quickly
and then enjoyed a social time.
The Catch the Ace draw was held
Friday evening with a great group
around all hoping to be the winner!
It wasn’t to be. The weekly winner
was Becky Beuerman winning $850.
She chose the envelope number 50
and found the queen of hearts.
Estimated jackpot will be $21,100.
The tickets are selling out very
quickly now that the jackpot is high.
Instead of one or two tickets, they
want to buy the maximum amount of
five, so tickets disappear pretty
quickly and folks come from far and
wide. Many folks have asked, “Why
not have more tickets printed?”
Catch the Ace draws are bound by
the rules set forth by the Ontario
Lottery and Gaming Commission,
which we must follow, on the licence
issued.
Friday evening was also karaoke
with Stubby D and there were
approximately 40 people enjoying
the singing, songs, food and fun of
the evening.
The Saturday afternoon
progressive euchre had seven tables
of players hoping to win a prize. The
high pink card was Murray Forbes
with 79 points; high white card, Mae
Ritchie, 74; second, pink card, Olave
Little, 78 and white card, Nancy
Turner, 72; low, pink card, Hazel
McIntyre 43; and white card, Glenn
Bridge, 48 and most lone hands,
Harold Metcalf, three. Comrades
Dianne Huether and Deb Cann
looked after the event.
A small crew of Eric, Deb and
Cam Ross went to the Clinton
Legion on Saturday to feed fish to a
small group for the Clinton Legion’s
80th anniversary.
The fish fry crew went to Vanastra
Curling Club to feed 215 folks on
Sunday afternoon. The crew
included Sandra Brown, Lisa
Glanville, Joan Smith, Deb Ross and
Barry O’Kraftka. They had a couple
of setbacks but managed to get the
job done in very good time.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd enjoy the music of the
Country Roads band. The folks
really enjoy the music and the 55 in
attendance managed to cover the
floor all evening.

At the Branch
‘Catch the Ace’ jackpot expected to break $20,000
A big win
While everyone lucky enough to get a ticket is hoping for the
estimated $20,000 ‘Catch the Ace’ jackpot at the Brussels
Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, the weekly prizes,
which have reached $900 in previous weeks, are nothing to
sneeze at. Above, Comrade Deb Ross draws Becky
Beuerman’s chosen card on Friday, the Queen of Hearts,
meaning the draw continues. Beuerman won $850 for
winning the weekly draw. (Denny Scott photo)
Prevalence of plastic a concern for writer
April is shot. Hope you made good
use of it and enjoyed the variable
weather along the way. For this
house, it means income tax season is
gone for another year and so for
some folks I’ll not see their faces
until 2020. Oh my, that sounds
onerous. Anyway, here’s to May
with all it brings.
Plastic is still on my mind this
week as several articles and
segments have made it impossible to
ignore. Plastic production got started
in the 1950s, it was noted that 80 per
cent of that production is now still in
our landfill sites with no change
expected soon.
I have great faith that eventually
we will do the right thing. We can’t
in good conscience leave the oceans
full of plastic and dead fish. We need

Helping out
The Brussels United Church’s monthly cause for the funds
collected from the donation plates went to buying socks and
underwear for the Women’s Shelter for Huron. Above,
MaryAnn Thompson, left, and Betty Graber-Watson share
a laugh over the underwear covering the collection plate
before last Sunday’s service, when all the underwear and
socks purchased were on display. (Denny Scott photo)
