‘Narrative’ highlights issues
Last year, Wingham became home
to a new Huron County Library
Program designed to help
community members better interact
with each other.
The project, called the Wingham
Community Narrative, over a four-
month period, saw library staff
conduct 50 interviews and 10
community conversations to help
address specific issues in the town.
The project began in 2016
as a pilot at the Bayfield Library,
and the Huron County Library
is now providing funding to do
such studies in other communities.
The main concern for Wingham
residents, according to the report, is
divisions in the community between
existing groups.
According to Paula Mackie of the
Alice Munro Library in Wingham,
divisions exist between existing
groups, and community information
about events and assets can be
difficult to find.
“That results in a lack of
community participation and
support,” she said. “Concerning too
is a reluctance to change and accept
new ideas and challenges in coming
together to work as a community
and stalling progress.”
She went on to say that “pockets
and cliques” form and people find it
difficult to determine how to get
involved in their communities.
As a result, the Wingham
Community Connectors Group
continues to meet at the Alice Munro
Library in Wingham, Mackie said,
and hopes to try and connect people
with information and volunteer
opportunities.
“The goal is to have a volunteer
fair in 2020 so that all community
members can see what Wingham has
in terms of groups and associations,”
Mackie said.
Council received the report,
thanking the library staff for their
work.
Joint service raises $679
On Wednesday, April 3 a delicious
dinner of beef stew, tea biscuits and
dessert was enjoyed at the Belgrave
Community Centre. The next meal
will be on Wednesday, May 1.
Joyce Van Camp of Alberta was a
guest for two weeks at her parents’
Jim and Mary Hunter’s home. While
here, she visited with family
members, other relatives and
friends.
There was a very successful joint
church service and chili lunch at
Knox United Church. The $679
raised will help with the education
costs of girls in Malawi. Linda
Willis, a director for “Change Her
World”, extends her thanks for the
tremendous response from the
Dungannon, Trinity and Belgrave
congregations. Thank you to
everyone who helped in any way,
preparing food, helping in the
kitchen and donating towards this
worthwhile cause.
On April 19, there will be a Good
Friday Service at Knox United
Church at 11 a.m.

Mad science!
Students at North Woods Elementary School got hands-on
with some scientific exploration last week thanks to Mad
Science of London. The company made presentations in
several classrooms, highlighting some of the more
experiential education in the field. Above, as part of a
presentation on the food chain, Brooke Beuermann
investigates some plant life. (Denny Scott photo)
