By Denny Scott - The Citizen
A conversation about the successes of
volunteer groups in Huron County
wouldn’t be complete without talking
about the local Branches of the Royal
Canadian Legion.
The Brussels Legion, which recently
completed an extensive remodeling
through fundraising and member efforts,
is a prime example of what a dedicated
group of community members can
accomplish when given a goal and
direction, and President Jamie Mitchell
says that is further proven with every
event the group holds.
“We definitely have a core group of
committed members,” he said. “Every
organization has members, but most have
a core group that is willing to work
towards the success of the group time and
time again.”
He said that groups may have 50
members in them, but only 20 of those
members are consistently helpng with
events.
“With our branch, I’m lucky because
we have a good-sized core group with
strong belief in community service and
what the Legion can do,” he said. “We do
anything we can to help out.”
The Legion boasts a roster of just shy
of 100 members, Mitchell said, who
dedicate themselves to community
service events and fundraisers like
the Legion’s famous fish fry dinners
and weekly dances.
“Anything we do, people can be sure
that the money raised will go right back
to the community,” he said. “Take the
annual Poppy Drive for example. Those
funds help with veterans or seniors in the
community who need help.”
Mitchell also pointed to the Legion’s
bursary programs and track and field
events as ways the Legion gives back to
the youngest members of the community,
though that comes with its own
challenges.
“With only one school to cover, our
Youth and Education board have to work
hard to reach out to those students,” he
said. “When we had two schools, before
Brussels closed, we had a lot of different
students to help out and many competed
in events like the Remembrance Day art
and literacy contests.”
He said the branch has struggled with
having only one school to work with, but
Legion members are making sure those
events continue.
“We work hard to keep those
connections with the community, but we
also work hard to keep the history of the
Legion and why it exists alive as well,”
he said.
The paramount responsibility of the
Legion, Mitchell said, is to support those
who serve their community, and the
members try to keep that alive. He said

Remembering
Undoubtedly, one of the most recognizable events that the Brussels Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion participates
in is the annual Remembrance Day service hosted at the community cenotaph just outside of the Legion itself. Cadets,
like the one shown above, are also an important part of the event. (File photo)
