The Citizen, 2019-04-11, Page 8PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2019. Sports Huron Heat Midget BB crowned Ontario champs The Huron Heat Midget BB squad, one of two Heat teams in the year-end provincial tournament over the weekend, were named Ontario champions, finishing off a great season. The Midget BB team bested the Lakeshore Lightning by a score of 4- 1 on April 7, completing a five-game tournament sweep to be named the best in the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) Provincial tournament. The squad bested the North Bay Ice Boltz 5-1 earlier on April 7 to earn the berth in the championship round. Earlier in the three-day tournament the squad bested the Markham Stouffville Stars 2-1, the Durham West Lightning 3-1, the Mount Forest Rams 3-1 and the Scarborough Sharks 1-0. The win was one of three impressive accolades the team earned over the year, including winning the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League (LLFHL) championships late last month and winning the International Silver Stick in Sarnia this past January. The Bantam BB team was also competing in the OWHA Provincials over the weekend, but didn’t have quite the same luck. The squad ended their tournament run with a 2-1 loss against the Kingston Ice Wolves on April 6. Earlier that day, the team had bested the Stoney Creek Sabres 2-0. On April 5, the Bantam BB Heat bested the Brantford Ice Cats 4-1, and started the tournament with a 2- 2 tie with the Toronto Leaside Wildcats. The Huron Heat club’s tryouts for the 2019/2020 season are just around the corner, with the first ice time scheduled for April 23 in Goderich. (File photo) Victim Services benefits from ‘Guns and Hoses’ game The call went out last week for fans to attend the annual Victim Services of Huron County charity hockey game and to no surprise the fans didn’t disappoint. The annual “Guns & Hoses” charity hockey game was a great success with a fast- paced and action-packed game played before a large crowd at the YMCA in Goderich. The Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Ice Hogs should’ve listened to coach “Grapes” as they ultimately blew an early two-goal lead. The Ice Hogs pressed, but the stellar goaltending and solid team play of the Goderich Fire Selects was up to the challenge. Heading into the third period, the fast-paced game was tied 2-2 and it was looking like overtime until the Selects banged in a rebound for the game-winning goal with just over five minutes to play. A last-minute fury of pressure was thwarted by the firefighters, but they hung on and eventually iced the game with an empty net goal, triumphing to a well-deserved 4-2 win. The action on the ice was great but the overall winner from this event was Victim Services of Huron County. A whopping $3,500 was raised for Victim Services Huron and an additional $1,225 was raised through a 50/50 draw that was donated to a local family to help support them with their child’s medical needs and associated costs. Huron County OPP, the Goderich Fire Department and Victim Services would like to sincerely thank the generous sponsors, volunteers and all the fans that all donated their time, talent and treasures to make this event such a tremendous success. Notice is hereby given that the 2019 Huron East Budget will be considered by Council on April 16, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. A brief budget synopsis is available on the Huron East website. www.huroneast.com Complete copies of the budget document will be available at the Municipal Office.
