Sawchuk showcases cosplay efforts in Goderich
For the past seven months, Blyth-
area youth Ella Sawchuk has been
putting her alteration skills to work
to further her passion for cosplay.
Cosplay is the practice of dressing
up like characters from books,
comics, movies, television or video
games. Sawchuk first got involved
last year, making her first costume to
attend a convention in Toronto.
Her first costume was Black
Widow, a character from the Marvel
Cinematic Universe (MCU) that
most recently appeared in 2018’s
Avengers: Infinity War, which she
crafted herself, minus the footwear.
“I made my Black Window
costume, excluding the footwear,”
she said. “I’m not quite there.”
She said, if she had a week to
focus on making the outfit, she could
have done that, but, as she fits in her
cosplaying alongside school and her
other activities, it took her a month
to put it all together.
More recently, Sawchuk has been
buying higher-quality costumes and
tailoring them herself, pointing to
outfits like her Peggy Carter
costume, another MCU member
who appeared in her own television
show, Agent Carter, and Captain
Marvel, from the recently released
Captain Marvel movie.
The latter drew some local
attention when she reached out to the
Park Theatre in Goderich and
offered to wear her costume for the
opening night of the movie, an
appearance she will be
repeating on April 26
when Avengers:
Endgame, in which
Captain Marvel is
featured, opens in
Goderich.
The first appearance
went pretty well,
Sawchuk said, with
people taking photos
with her and
appreciating the outfit.
That positive
feedback has been a
running theme for her
cosplay projects,
including her Instagram
account @cospleanor.
“I get a lot of positive
feedback and I think
that’s because I enjoy
what I’m doing,” she
said. “I’m connecting
with other people with
similar interests.”
As for her next
projects, Sawchuk said
she is currently looking
to bring Elsa from the
Frozen series to life,
based on what was seen
in the recently-released
Frozen 2 trailer, as well
as another MCU hero:
Valkyrie, who last
appeared in 2017’s
Thor: Ragnarok.
The two fit her
cosplay mandate, which
is to shine a light on
strong, positive female
role models.
Sawchuk also
recently hinted at a
Hope Van Dyne project
on her Instagram
account, a hero better known as The
Wasp from the recent MCU film
Ant-Man and The Wasp.

at oncoming traffic and not
stopping.
“Are control methods coming
later?” he asked, saying he would
hate to see another stop light put up
so close to the existing light.
Huron County Planner Laura
Simpson said the Huron County
Public Works had looked at traffic in
the area, and didn’t look at installing
traffic control measures such as
traffic signals. They did, however,
look at alighing the entrances.
She said that a traffic study has
been completed and which
investigated compatible movements
between the two plazas.
Councillor Chris Palmer had the
same concerns, suggesting the
entrance to the new site be moved to
the north, away from the buildings
that will be on the southern portion
of the developable land.
“There seems to be room on that
lot,” he said, adding that he would
prefer people wanting to go from
one plaza to another to “zig-zag”
across the road instead of going
straight across.
Reeve Bernie Bailey said that
straight-through might be preferable
because, as part of the
documentation, the issue of
pedestrian safety was raised,
including costs for sidewalks to be
extended to the new development.
“Going straight across may be
better for if we put a crosswalk
there,” he said. “I see a crosswalk
coming there, or a roundabout.”
Falconer’s concerns persisted,
however, as he said that having four
lanes of traffic going north to south
(including turning lanes) and three
lanes of traffic crossing the road,
would lead to severe traffic
congestion.
Deputy-Reeve Trevor Seip said he
had other concerns with the
development, saying that Wingham
already has four other gas bars,
including one that opened last year
just north of this location.
While he was concerned about
how many gas bars a town like
Wingham could support, even with
traffic to other centres like Listowel,
he said council had no say in that
issue.
His concern, however, was that
council would need to find a way to
make lands currently serving as gas
bars appealing for redevelopment if
they close.
Seip said he is for development as
it breeds investment dollars and tax
dollars, but he wanted to be sure
that, 20 years from now, council
wasn’t trying to encourage
development on lots that used to be
gas bars, which can require
significant investment to
rehabilitate.
Council took no action as a result
of the concerns aired and approved
the site plan control agreement for
the development.
