First, it was very cold temperatures, snow and drifting snow, then beautiful sun, wind, lots of wind, rain and warming temperatures. Maybe we are heading towards spring! Celebrating a milestone birthday last week was Karen Uhler. The gathering of friends went to Listowel to enjoy Chinese food and then back to the Uhler home for a night of games, fun and laughs. Helping Karen usher in her 70s were Allan and Karen Carter, Jack and Mary Helen McLachan, Jim and Janet Papple, Gerald and Nancy Smith, George and Ruth Townsend, Jim and Nancy McLlwain and Graeme and Helen Craig. Happy birthday Karen! Welcome home to Murray and Sherry McCall. They spent about two-and-a-half weeks in Florida. They toured around and spent time at Murray’s brother Jack’s place and then time at Sherry’s sister Pat’s place. They enjoyed great warm weather and a great time visiting with the families. Returning from a vacation in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic are a few folks. Heading down for a couple of weeks of sand and sun, were Fred and Teuni Smith. They were surprised very shortly after arriving, son Steven and wife Kim were also at the resort. They surprised mom and dad as part of a birthday present for Fred. They had a great time and were glad they missed some of our rotten weather! We are pleased to hear that Darlene Fischer is home from her health-interrupted vacation. She took ill while on holiday in the Dominican Republic, was hospitalized and had to be flown home by private plane. She is now in Clinton Hospital and we hope she is recovering and feeling better. We are pleased to report that Gord Pryce is now in Seaforth Hospital and will be for awhile. He has a long road to recovery ahead and visits from family and friends will help pass the days. The past week has also had its touch of sadness. We offer our sympathies to the family of Ken Anderson on his passing. He will be missed by his wife Diane and children Kyle, Adam and Cody and their families of five grandchildren. Ken had his own business for many years, dealing with cars and salvage and repairs. He was a pleasant fellow who will be missed by many. Our condolences to all. Our sympathies are extended to the McLlwain family on the passing of Audrey McLlwain. She will be missed by her devoted and loving husband Jack and her sons Mark and Dave and their families. She will be missed by her sister June Smith and brothers Reid and Dave Hackwell. Audrey was a lovely lady, a teacher in earlier years, a devoted member of Northside United Church and the director of the Northside United Church Junior Choir for 42 years. Audrey had a beautiful smile and a giving and generous soul, who loved to help whenever she could when asked. Our condolences to the McLlwain family. There were 23 eager players ready to shoot at the boards for the Cranbrook dart night. Team eight of John Gillis, Kathy Workman and Lucas Keffer won all six games for the evening play. The high shot for the ladies was by Kathy hitting 109 and Logan Petersen hitting 100 along with Martin Boettcher. Saturday morning was an interesting time at the Walton Inn at breakfast time for many. Stopping by was Allan Thompson, the Liberal candidate for Huron Bruce. He spent his time meeting the many Walton and area residents who enjoy coming to Walton Inn. He listened to all and questioned what issues were important to them. He kept very busy taking notes of the many issues raised. He enjoyed breakfast with us and then was on his way. Vice-President Evy Verschaeve opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge. As an ice-breaker activity, club members passed around a beach ball with questions on it. Once a member received the ball, they answered one of the questions listed on the ball. Members then answered roll call, which was, “Name your favourite sweet bread or bun and what quick bread or muffin did you make at home?” The club headed to the kitchen to make dinner rolls. Each member made a different shape for their roll, there was the spiral twist, bow knot, snail, parkerhouse and cloverleaf rolls. Continuing, the members judged whisks that would be used when making brownie batter. The business portion of the meeting was then held. Members then had the opportunity to taste the dinner rolls prepared earlier in the meeting. Meeting three of the Grey Township Yeast Beasts was held at the Baan residence on Feb. 15. The meeting opened with the 4-H pledge. President Austin Bieman was absent so Vice-President Evy Verschaeve led the meeting. Roll call for this meeting was “How did we eat bread today?”. The members gave answers varying from toast for breakfast to buns with their supper. Members went on to start the recipe set-up for the meeting. All members had a great time making a bread pizza and a batch of apple muffins. While the bread and muffins baked, the members discussed the business for the meeting. They then learned the difference between kneaded and batter bread and had a fun time participating in various icebreakers. When the recipes were done baking members all got to try their creations. They tasted fabulous. The meeting closed with the 4-H motto.
