Weather knocks out power, results in road closure
It is windy, windy, windy, now
snowy, still windy and now dark, as
I sit and write on Sunday evening.
The hydro went out around 9:30
p.m. but at least I could still work on
the computer. We felt badly for the
hard-working hydro men out
working in such terrible weather to
restore the power. We were only out
an hour, but I am sure many more
were out longer. There were times
during the late afternoon that we
could hardly see the shed because of
the driving snow. Morning comes
and another day of school
cancellations, road closures and
events. Another blow of wintery
weather!
The weather was the cause of an
accident on Blyth Road on Sunday
around lunch time. A tractor trailer
blew over on its side in the strong
winds. It was quite a job to get the
rig upright again thanks to the brave
the men working in the windy
conditions.
Congratulations to Curtis and
Michelle Verstoep on the birth of a
son on the weekend. Daxton Curtis
will be spoiled by grandparents
Christine and Brad Knight, Rob
Smith and Hugh and Pearl Verstoep.
Congratulations to all!
Returning from a trip to San
Antonio, Texas are Judy Emmrich
and three friends. They were away a
week and report it was a nice trip.
They kept busy checking out some
of the sights of the area.
Most exciting was the return to
Ontario on Sunday evening and the
terrible drive from Kitchener to
Walton in the storm. Welcome back
Judy!
Neil McGavin was on his yearly
winter camping trip a week or so
ago. The group of 12 friends
travelled to Algonquin Park for a few
days away. They will admit they
have changed from sleeping in tents
to a warm and comfortable lodge,
complete with sauna, as the years
have passed. They spend a lot of
time snowshoeing the trails of the
area, going as far as four or five
kilometres each day. For some that
doesn’t sound very far, but
remember, most of these men are
over 70 and are still out enjoying the
fresh air and physical activities.
Good stuff men!
Snowmobilers out there had about
a week to enjoy the trails last week
and the groomer tried to keep the
trails in shape. The trail no longer
goes by our place, but I could tell by
the road crossings that it was being
used. Unfortunately, the mild
weather and rain during the early
part of the weekend, will have
brought a stop again to the sport
right now. The blizzard conditions of
late Sunday and Monday will
hopefully bring enough snow for
them to be busy again.
Congratulations to Bridget
McCallum on her achievement of
Reserve Champion at the Ontario
Association of Agricultural Societies
convention in Toronto last week. She
received recognition for her
chocolate chip cookies. She had
shown them at the Brussels Fall Fair
and they were then chosen to go on
to the competition in Toronto.
Congratulations to Bridget!
The Cranbrook Dart Club had
another nasty night for play, but 20
managed to brave the weather to
come. Team One of George Zwep,
Gayle Speiran and Jane Zwep
managed to win four games for the
night. Team Five of Brad Speiran
and Pat Gillis also managed four
wins. Team Eight of Lucas Keffer,
Kathy Workman and John Gillis kept
pace with four wins as well. Rita
Bowers and Annette Lewington
played very well and beat their
husbands two games but lost the
luck when playing Brad and Pat and
were skunked! The high lady shot of
the night was by Maria Boettcher
hitting 93 and for the men, Lucas hit
100! Hopefully the bad weather is
behind us on Wednesday nights for
the rest of the season.
I can report what I thought was an
unusual sight last week. I was
delivering mail and saw a flock of
black birds or crows sitting in the
field. But I noticed one had a white
head, then a second one had a white
head. Then the flock took off and I
noticed they were not all blackbirds,
but two bald eagles flying with them.
Maybe that is common, but I thought
it was strange!
Neil McDonald’s visit is over and
he went back to Vancouver. He had
to suffer through some nasty
weather, enjoyed a birthday dinner
with his Aunt Peg and some old
friends. He will be back again in the
spring.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were Shawna Terpstra, Helen
Brenie, Kathy Clark, Tyler
Williamson, Steve Knight, Kevin
McNaughton, Bruce McDonald,
Tamara Williamson, Chris Lee,
Carly Terpstra, Emily Cousins, Terry
Nichol, Andrew Black and Beverly
Stevenson. Happy birthday to all!

Ken hitting 108. Darts start at 8 p.m.
on Thursday evenings for anyone to
come out and play.
The Catch the Ace draw on Friday
evening had a nice crowd around for
the draw and all hoped to be the big
winner. The weekly winner was
Cathy (Sholdice) Fischer of P.E.I.
She wins $500 and she chose
envelope #42 to find the 10 of clubs.
The jackpot will grow again to an
estimated $10,400 for the draw on
March 1.
Saturday evening the Branch held
the first annual “Spring O’Lympix”.
With only four teams arriving to
play, it didn’t take long to move
through the six different events. A
lot of laughs and hilarious situations
seemed to arise for the participants.
All enjoyed the evening with the
eventual winners being Zoey Onn
and Patti VanderMeer. There may
have been only eight competitors but
over 30 enjoyed cheering them on.
Hopefully next year, there will be
more “athletes “ to participate.
The Remembrance Day banners
that are available for families to
purchase in memory of loved ones,
are to be ordered by the end of
March. Those who are interested or
want more information are asked to
call the Branch as soon as possible.
The banners will hang on the light
standards on main street during the
Remembrance Day period every
year and then hang in the Branch the
rest of the year. Call the Branch
today 519-887-6562.
The Progressive euchre is
undergoing a few changes for this
week’s play, so we hope everyone
will be happy with the new format.
Euchre begins at 1 p.m. on March 2.
