Firefighters prevent significant damage to hall
The dust has settled on the burst
pipe in Blyth Community Memorial
Hall and the prognosis is that things
could have been a lot worse.
“We’re still waiting for some of
the invoicing and information to
come in, but it’s really turning into a
bit of a non-event,” North Huron
Director of Public Works and
Facilities Sean McGhee told The
Citizen during a recent interview.
On Jan. 30, a pipe burst at the back
of the Bainton Gallery in the TCC
Link at the site, resulting in water
cascading through the gallery.
“The fact that things have turned
out as well as they have is based
largely on the very, very rapid
response of the Fire Department of
North Huron,” McGhee said. “There
was no damage to the flooring and,
while some drywall does need to be
replaced, it could have been a lot
worse.”
McGhee said that the fire
department’s timely arrival and
members’ efforts, alongside other
volunteers, to get the water off the
floor and out of the building
prevented damage to the parquet
flooring.
“It could’ve been a much different
day,” he said.
As for what caused the burst pipe,
McGhee said that is a mystery yet to
be solved.
“We’re investigating it,” he said.
“Basically, until we put everything
back together, it will be difficult to
determine whether it was
temperature-related or not.”
McGhee said the nature of the duct
work in the area will be investigated,
and he will be working with the
contractors in charge of the recent
renovation of Memorial Hall to
figure that out.
“We’re definitely looking to figure
out what that root cause is,” he said.
“We will take temperature readings
and talk to the [heating, ventilation,
and air conditioning (HVAC)]
people to figure this out.”
While that mystery remains,
McGhee reiterated that things could
have been much worse than they
were, saying that the insurance
adjuster who attended the site was
“pleasantly surprised” at the limited
amount of damage to the site.
