Rowe, Freedom Syrup honoured with two awards Bob Rowe has received two awards on behalf of Freedom Syrup in the past month, showing just how important the fundraising initiative is to the community. Freedom Syrup, located in a sugar bush behind Jeff and Shannon McGavin’s home near Walton, has been raising money for the families of fallen soldiers for nearly a decade, offering maple syrup for donations only. Rowe received a Remarkable Citizen award from Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson late last month. Earlier this month, at the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund’s (DMMF) Order of the Good Samaritan Awards program, he received, in absentia, The Corporal Matthew Dinning award for volunteer for veterans and service persons. While Rowe is happy to receive the awards, he is even happier that both awards referenced Freedom Syrup and not just himself. “Any time you’re recognized for your accomplishments, it’s always great,” he said. “I accepted both awards on behalf of everyone at Freedom Syrup. I was really pleased the entire organization was recognized.” Rowe said the fact that it’s a group effort is what Freedom Syrup “is all about”. “This is not a one-man show,” he said. “There are a lot of dedicated people working together not only for the troops but for what we stand for. That’s what keeps our volunteers coming back.” Rowe said that Brenda Wheeler nominated him for the award from Thompson after her husband Gerry had received one last year for his involvement with the International Plowing Match in Walton in 2017. “She thought that what we do in the bush should be recognized,” Rowe said, adding that Thompson was aware of Freedom Syrup as he had spoke on the subject at several events of which she has been a part. Corporal Matthew Dinning Award really hit home for Rowe, as he was nominated by Dinning’s mother Laurie. “I was really humbled when Laurie nominated me for her son’s award,” he said. “That was pretty special. That award speaks to everything that represents Freedom Syrup.” Laurie and her husband Lincoln are regulars at Freedom Syrup’s dedication event every May, so Rowe said it meant a lot to him. Rowe was unable to attend the DMMF event, so the award will be presented at this year’s Freedom Syrup dedication service on May 19. “That event is really special to me, and all the people that volunteer, that commit to the cause, will be there so I’ll be able to accept it as part of the group instead of on my own.” This is a special year for Freedom Syrup because, while they have been working for a number of years, Rowe said they are approaching a significant milestone. “We’re so close to the $100,000 mark,” he said. “We’re just a couple thousand dollars away from that mark, so if we can hit it, that will be a special event. The next milestone for us after that is $250,000.” By Denny Scott The Citizen Telling the tale For years Bob Rowe, right, has been showing people the wall of honour at Freedom Syrup: former maple syrup lids that have become markers for fallen soldiers. Freedom Syrup raises money for the families of fallen soldiers and it and Rowe were recently recognized twice for it. Again, children missed school, this time because of ice. The sideroads were a sheet of ice. When I had to travel on them just before lunch, not in the bus, I only made it half a mile and knew that was a big mistake. I turned around in the first available driveway and made my way back to the highway, slip sliding along. Unfortunately, a couple of hours later, I tried the sideroads again and this time, I managed to slip into the ditch. I was towed out and back to the paved roads again. I know the road crews were trying their best to scrape the roads and they can only get so many done, and thankfully, they certainly were much better on Thursday morning for bus time. Congratulations to Gerry and Brenda Wheeler on welcoming the arrival of their third grandchild. Brent and partner Caroline have welcomed a second son they have named Luke. He will be welcomed home by big brother Blake. Gerry and Brenda travelled to Grande Prairie, Alberta to meet their new grandson and report that it was very cold out there! Welcoming her first grandson is Donna McClure. Congratulations to Trisha (McClure) and husband Scott on the birth of their first baby, a son, they have named Sam. Congratulations to all! Welcoming their first grandchild are Ken and Val Pethick. Son Rick and wife Alicia welcomed the safe arrival, on the stormy Friday, of Ian Richard Pethick. He will be loved not only by Ken and Val, but also first-time grandparents Rob and Sue Farrish of Listowel. Congratulations to all!
