In recent years, Bell has been donating a portion of its various media charges on the last Wednesday of January to mental health. Mental health has been identified as a crucial aspect of today’s health. This is Bell’s attempt to raise awareness of the issue. A great deal of money was raised again this year. In recent years the terms Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sadness and postpartum have been heard/discussed more frequently. And yet there continues to be a stigma associated with admitting a mental health issue. How society has changed when sports coaches are now watching for the signs and big companies are offering help to their employees. We are, as it turns out, our brothers’ keepers. Realizing one needs help can be the true stumbling block. Tanner Steffler, a Seaforth area teenager, died recently because he and his parents were unable to access help for him. The Tanner Steffler Foundation has been set up to raise awareness and make funds available for students to get the help they need. Bullying in our schools can be a major cause of student despair. On Wednesday, Jan. 30 Hullett Public School took part in discussions about mental health and wellness and through the sale of candygrams raised $509 for the Tanner Steffler Foundation. Well done, Hullett. Discussions like these will hopefully help our young folk reach out when they feel they are in trouble. This Thursday, Valentine’s Day, is a Spirit Day at Hullett. Closets will be raided for red, pink and/or white clothing items to wear to brighten up the halls. And the school will hold a dance that day as well. Fun for these dreary days of winter! Hullett will hold its in-house public speaking and storytelling competition on Thursday, Feb. 28 beginning at 9 a.m. Brighten your winter by dropping by the school that day and enjoy hearing what is interesting our young folk these days. NEWS FROM LONDESBORO By BRENDA RADFORD Call 523-4296 PEOPLE AROUND LONDESBORO Coincidently, right on the heels of Bell Let’s Talk Day, I found myself in a situation that had me thinking about mental health again. As I have reached the “senior years”, I find articles in magazines and papers that jump out at me, about living to the max as a senior. That situation can cause mental health issues and advice is abundant. Seems the onus falls to the individual to stay involved and active. However circumstances can vary widely and the individual may not recognize the need to make life changes. It is very easy for a senior to feel unneeded/unwanted by the rest of the world, useless and having no value. So, last week both my husband and I stayed housebound with a cold and flu. It was the first time we felt able to actually stay home as is suggested in those circumstances for the benefit of others and try to kick the bug. Perhaps because it was the first time, I soon realized how easy it is to have those feelings of being unneeded, of not being important to the rest of the world. U.S. President Donald Trump continued to rant about his wall, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau continued to work toward freeing the Canadians in China, traffic continued on the highway in front of the farm, the Toronto Maple Leafs continued to battle toward the playoffs and the rest of you went about keeping life moving. I just felt totally unwell and a little sorry for myself. See how easy it is to begin to have an issue? That’s why talking about mental health and one’s feelings is so important. Members of Londesborough United Church are reminded that on Feb. 17 the morning worship will begin at 9:30 a.m. This gives Knox United in Auburn the later service, followed by its annual meeting. Gayle Coleman will lead both worships. This means the following week, Feb. 24, Londesborough United will hold its annual meeting. Bring along potluck finger food to share in advance of the business. So, go to church early this Sunday and head down the road after for breakfast at the community hall with the Lions Club. I went searching for a valentine message to offer and came across a poem titled “Daily Valentines” by Cleo King. I offer the last two verses: “Our valentines may be a smile, a cheerful word or two, A helping hand, a tender glance that signals, ‘I love you’. And if we often take the time to give these friendly signs, The world will soon be brightened by our daily valentines.” Youth Winter Sports Pages The Citizen Coaches and parents ~ we need your team’s picture and players’ names 1.
