Dessert included:Homemade pies –$14.99 + tax By Jo-Ann McDonald It was another quiet week at the Brussels Legion Branch. Cadets were cancelled due to the stormy weather. The Thursday night darts had some of their usual in-town crowd make it and have a good night. The Catch the Ace draw was held Friday evening with a nice few at the Branch. The winner was Candice Riley winning $406. She chose envelope number four and found the eight of diamonds. The estimated jackpot should reach over $8,000 for this week. The Saturday afternoon euchre had five-and-a-half tables of players. Glenn Bridge and B.J. Hummel were in charge. Winners were: first, Frank Hulley and Paulene Bennett, 76; two teams tied for second with 73 points, Carol and Susan and Anne Laidlaw and Joyce Hodgins; low, Mary McIntosh and Gord Machan, 46 points; lone hands, Mae Ritchie and Lillian Appleby, four. They are discussing changing the euchres to allow players to come play as singles. I think it is called progressive euchre. You play for yourself and keep your own score. High lady from the table would move up a table, high man (or partner) would move down a table and the losing pair would stay, with one person moving to the chair to the right, so as not to play together again. There will still be cash prizes and they are to be determined by the numbers attending. We are going to try this for awhile and see if that increases our numbers attending. So if you have nothing to do on Saturday, Feb. 16, come out and play cards. It will still be $5 a person and there will be light lunch. There were 12 members of the Branch attending zone mixed darts in Lucknow on Saturday. There were three teams of four and six pairs of doubles to play and they all had a great day. Three doubles teams, Ron and Daisy Schmidt, Jason and Carol Colgate, Jim and Sandra Brown will all move on in doubles. Team Linda Bird, Lisa Glanville, Eric Ross and Andy Overholt had a great day in teams. Team Jim, Sandra and Chris Brown and Catrina Josling and Team Ron, Daisy, Jason and Carol will move on in teams. Do you remember the veterans banners that were put up prior to Remembrance Day this past year on the light standards near the Branch? There were three purchased by Comrades of the Branch and now we would like to know if more people would like to remember their loved ones who served by purchasing a banner. The banners take time to be produced and we are hoping to have a good number of orders to send. There is a cost to the families for the banners. Most of the information required is on file at the Branch, we just need to gauge the public’s interest in ordering the banners. For more information, please contact the Branch and speak with Poppy Chairman Sandra Brown. Above, District Chief Gary Boyer, left, and Captain Bill Pearson of the Grey division were recognized for 30 and 40 years of service as firefighters, respectively. (Photo submitted) Well, we missed it! The storm of the month hit and we were in Edmonton. From the pictures we saw when away and the stories we heard on return, it was a good one. A week of no school for some, highways closed for lengthy periods for others, businesses shut and these were just a few of the details shared. It sounds like the tales that will be reviewed for many years. Oh, sorry we missed it. So, the Alberta report consists of family check-ins. Families of one son, Phil and two brothers, Clif and Jim, were on the agenda this visit. Of course Hark, now 14 months, was overdue for his check in, toddlers change so fast, it’s amazing. Of course, he’s beautiful, with big brown eyes that can dance as the level of excitement grows. I’d forgotten how fast wee people can move from the paper roll to the toilet bowl, so he gets full marks for normal. Oh yes, Phil and Lauren are well too. Clif and Jim are doing their part with grandbabies to keep Alberta populated. Charlie at 13 months has brightened the life of Clif and Anne with his energy level, coy smile and determination. Meanwhile Jim and Beth’s Rimby twins arrived in December. Wade and Meghan welcomed a girl, Aubrey Elizabeth and her brother Hayes Emmet, both over seven pounds now and sweet as buttons, brother Erin is not so sure about the girl yet. Patrick and Allison have three busy boys under five in Rimby as well and Nicole in Lloydminister has a son, Bishop, who visits often. So, lunch was a pretty busy time keeping ahead of the appetites of all these boys. For anyone remembering the wee Hetherington boys, the blonde heads with dad’s gait have shifted to Alberta. Lots of energy and fun there. So, back to our life and thinking about the lives we share across this land, we are blessed. As you can imagine after 10 days of no responsibility and with the snow now turning to slush, I’ve not quite adjusted to life in Brussels, I’m sure it will come. Bye now, Betty G.W.
