Welcome to winter and some very
cold weather. Blustery winds and
snow, but still not enough for
snowmobiling. Maybe February will
be better for those anxiously waiting
to get out on their sleds around here.
Many have travelled north to enjoy
the sport, but I am content to stay
indoors by the fire!
Old friends Kevin and Pam
Benneweis were in our area this past
weekend. Their home is in Belle
Vallee, just north of New Liskeard.
They were here to celebrate a late
Christmas with family. They report it
is very cold where they are, but the
cold is not as damp. It has been
-30°C many days. They have cows
and they are in the bush and come to
the barn and the heated water bowls
for drinking water. A seven-hour
drive and they were on their way
home when they stopped at the
Walton Inn for a bite before heading
away. It was nice to see them and we
hope they had a good trip home on
Monday.
It was a cold day for a wedding
but Saturday, Jan. 26 was the day
Adam McClure and his new bride
Laura were married in Stratford. The
festivities were held at the Stratford
Golf and Country Club for the
gathering of family and friends of
the couple.
Congratulations to Adam and
Laura. They will be residing in
Stratford. Adam is the son of Fred
and Heidi McClure of Walton.
Rae McClure was home from
Forestburg, Alberta to attend the
celebration and spent time with his
siblings before returning home.
It was the gathering of the ladies’
birthday group at JR’s last week to
celebrate the January birthdays. The
birthday girls included Sandra
Cable, who hit the milestone of 70,
and Joan Bernard. Enjoying a
delicious chicken dinner with the
birthday girls were Isabel Wheeler,
Merle Cousins, Betty Campbell,
Nora Stephenson, Betty
McCutcheon, Lois McCutcheon,
Rene Richmond, Laura Barbour,
Bev Palmer, Audrey Cardiff, Betty
Cardiff, Nelva Scott, Jean Davidson,
Alice Marks, Cora Alcock, Dale
Chesher and Edna McLellan. Happy
birthday to the ladies.
We send our get-well wishes to
Dave Bann who is suffering some
health issues at this time.
We send our get-well wishes to
Jim Armstrong, who at this time is in
hospital. We hope he is feeling better
soon.
We also send out good thoughts to
Jean Bewley, a former Waltoner, to
feel better. Jean is in hospital and we
hope she is back home soon.
I stand corrected on the name of
the convention attended by some of
the ladies from Brussels and Walton
Institutes. The ladies were at the
Federated Women’s Institute of
Ontario annual general meeting held
at the Best Western in Brantford.
Margaret McInroy was running for a
position on the executive of the
Ontario board, and she repeated that
speech she gave at the general
meeting, for the Walton meeting, at
her home. Lucy Hesse and Ruth
Bauer also attended in Brantford.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Hannah Dalton,
Brandon McGavin, Scott Bromley,
Brenda McIntosh, Fred Uhler, Ryan
Jacklin, Sheldon Lee, Alexis
Beuerman, Chris Ryan, James Blake
and Mark Wilbee. Happy birthday to
all!

Hilson has worked with
individuals with developmental

felt this was an opportunity to allow
Mitch to have a career and connect

The original goal of the company

creating an opportunity for Mitch

The café has been the focus of
several media stories since opening
two years ago.
Scherpenzeel, the co-founder, co-
president and secretary of
Homegrown Food Bank, said that
the food baskets for the organization
will be distributed out of the site,
and goods will be available there as
well as online.
“We’ve had several farmers
contact us regarding having their
produce here, and even had people
looking for jobs,” Scherpenzeel said.
Homegrown Food Basket, which
has been marketed as an online
farmers’ market, is a unique business
venture within itself, but
MacPherson and Scherpenzeel have
taken the project and used it to
launch a new venture: the
Homegrown Land Bank Group.
The two ventures allow
MacPherson and Scherpenzeel to
encourage and provide loans for
farms both at home and abroad,
encouraging financial sustainability
for a new generation of farmers
around the world.
The land bank group was recently
featured at Huron County’s
Meaningful Market event in
Brussels, where MacPherson and
Scherpenzeel presented it as part of
a Dragons’ Den-style pitch
competition.
