Big event
The Fabric Arts and Creative Textiles program (FACTS) held its inaugural community yarn day
on Jan. 19, which saw 15 yarn exchangers trade nearly 100 balls of yarn and seven knitters
“yarn bomb” the #FlowerMeBlyth topiaries in front of Blyth Memorial Hall. Jennifer Triemstra-
Johnston, head of FACTS, told The Citizen that extra scarves, hats and a child’s sweater were
left on the topiaries for those who need them to stay warm this winter. From left: Helen van

Lions to host annual
snow volleyball event
The Blyth Lions Club’s annual co-
ed snow volleyball tournament is
entering its 10th year with this year’s
event set for Saturday, Feb. 24 at
Blyth Lions Park.
The annual six-on-six tournament
has, in recent years, been dedicated
in memory of Blake Hesselwood and
John Bokhout, two young
Blyth natives who perished in
an Alberta house fire several years
ago.
Teams will face off against each
other in a best-of-three game format
with a maximum of five serves
before players rotate.
Games go to 15 points and the
winning team must claim victory by
two points. There is a minimum of
two female members per team. The
cost to register is $10 per member.
Sign-up for the tournament begins
at 10:30 a.m., with games to begin
after 11 a.m. There will be a heated
beverage tent and a hot lunch served
by Lions Club members.

FROM BLYTH
Cable serves as special guest at service
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, Jan. 20
was Mary Lou Stewart. Ushering
were Emily Phillips and John
Stewart. Susanna Lyman was guest
organist and Katie Dockstader, choir
director while Lori Falconer ran the
Power Point.
Sandra Cable, guest speaker,
welcomed everyone to church on
such a cold sunny day. Sandra
reminded everyone of the
announcements printed in the
bulletin. Special attention that the
ladies and men are gearing up the
rolling pins to start making meat
pies. Turkey pies are being made on
Feb. 6 and beef pies are being made
Feb. 20. Get your order into Donna
Moore at 519-523-9855 and she will
get your name on the list. She also
reminded everyone of the annual
meeting next Sunday.
Sandra lit the Christ candle and
the other candles on the altar table.
She invited everyone to greet one
another with a friendly hello or an
elbow bump. The first hymn,
“Immortal, Invisible, God Only
Wise”, was sung. The call to worship
was repeated responsively followed
by the opening
prayer repeated in unison.
The children’s hymn was “My
Love Colours Outside the Lines”.
Sandra had a wrapped parcel in
her hands and asked the children
what they thought it was. It was a
wrapped gift box with a bow on the
top. She asked the children if they
thought that all gifts came wrapped
up like this on. The gifts we get from
God are not wrapped. We refer to
them as spiritual gifts. God gives us
all special gifts that we should share
with one another. A spiritual gift
could be a smile or a hug to show
someone we care. Some of us have
more gifts than others, but everyone
should share their gifts with others.
The congregation repeated a
children’s prayer after Sandra. The
choir sang the anthem “Jesus and
Me” accompanied by John
McDowell at the piano. Sandra
thanked the choir for its toe-tapping
anthem.
The scripture reading was from 1st
Corinthians 12:1-11, the story of
Paul preaching of God’s wisdom.
Sandra’s message to the
congregation was, “Who Gets What
from Whom, Where and When?
Next week is the annual meeting.
During the coming week, we should
try and figure out what gifts we have
that we can share with the church.
Sandra told a story of a father who
was a bricklayer and his son who
was an accomplished violin player.
They were both good at their jobs
but didn’t do well at the other’s job.
We all don’t have the same talents,
even though we are from the same
families.
Spiritual gifts bring us joy and
encouragement. The gift of
encouragement is often recognized
much later in life. People often don’t
know the gifts they are given. In the
scriptures, Paul gives us a list of
God’s gifts to us. We should focus
on the gifts God has given to us and
share them with others. Gifts are as
different as night and day, we are all
different in God’s eyes but we are
loved by God. Paul challenges us to
pray and to find ways to use our gifts
and celebrate them to serve God and
others.
The next hymn “Deep in Our
Hearts” was sung. The Offering was
received followed by the offertory
response “Spirit, Open My Heart”,
the offertory prayer, the singing of
“Lord, Listen to Your Children
Praying”, leading into the prayers
for the people, silent prayers and the
singing of the Lord’s Prayer.
The last hymn, “Living Christ
Bring Us Love”, was followed by
the benediction and the singing of
the response “Thank You Lord for
This Day”. Everyone was invited for
coffee and fellowship.

Mother Nature showed us that she
still remembers that it’s winter and
letting us have very cold, cold
weather. We have been lucky in our
area that we haven’t accumulated
the snow that other places not far
away have received. Temperatures
of -20°C, feeling like -30°C are
quite a change from a week ago with
temperatures around 0°C.
