The community extends sincere sympathy to Warren and Evelyn Rich and family in the sudden loss of Warren’s brother, George Rich and his life partner of 50 years, Mary Wood, who passed away in a car accident, along with their beloved dog Buddy. Sympathy is also extended to Jerrad and Brooke Riley and Joel and Jen Riley in the loss of their grandmother, Audrey Riley. Roger, Debbie and Caleigh Hopper greeted worshippers and handed out the bulletins at Knox United Church on Jan. 13, the First Sunday after Epiphany. Elizabeth Procter played inspiring prelude music and accompanied all the hymns. Minister Brian Hymers lit the Christ Candle. After the opening hymn, “Morning has Broken”, Brian went over the announcements for the church for the week as members of the congregation listened. The Official Board is looking for a new Mission Statement. Members received three and appreciate them, but would really like more before the Annual Meeting on Jan. 27. Please submit your Mission Statement to Roger Hopper. The Annual Meeting will be held after the church service. Please bring sandwiches, fruit or sweets. Happy birthday was sung to Mary Hunter and Florence Wightman, both of them celebrating birthdays on January 14. The Call to Worship was read responsively and the congregation sang, “Jesus, Friend of Little Children” and children’s time followed. Brian spoke on baptism. John baptized people in the Jordan River. He dipped them quickly under the water. This showed everyone that they wanted to follow God by being good. John baptized Jesus. As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, the spirit of God came down from heaven. It looked like a dove that landed on Jesus. God said this is my Son whom I love and I am pleased with Him. The scripture passages were from Isaiah 43:1-7 and Luke 3:15-17, 21- 22 read by Roger and Caleigh Hopper. Brian reflected on Jesus being baptized when he was 30 years old by John the Baptist. There is no recollection of him in his teenage years. Our own lives are much the same with our circle of life going by so rapidly. God is to be our Redeemer. God tells us not to be afraid, for he will look after us. We have to trust in God. God is always with us and there for our recovery. Jesus died on the cross to relieve us of all our burdens. Brian referred to the scripture lesson the baptism of Jesus. “How Firm a Foundation” was the Hymn of Response Nancy Jardin reported on the minute for missions, which was entitled “Multi Faith Spaces for Students.” Loving our neighbour is at the heart of mission and service. Larry Harper and Doug Walker took up the offering, which was dedicated. The first verse of “We Praise You, O God” was the offertory response. The Lord’s Prayer was spoken in unison followed by the parting hymn, which was, “When Jesus Came to Be Baptized.” The benediction and blessing “Go Now in Peace,” the Giving of the Christ Flame and the Extinguishing of the Christ Candle ended the worship service.
