Novice Rep Crusaders claim Silver Stick crown
Winning team
The Blyth Brussels Novice Rep Crusaders claimed top spot in the Novice C division of the
Kincardine Regional Silver Stick Tournament. The win earns them a chance at the 2019
International Silver Stick finals in Pelham. Back row, from left: Coaching staff members Erin

The Blyth Brussels Novice Rep
Crusaders finished 2018 out on a
high note, earning the top-place
finish in the Novice C division at the
Kincardine Regional Silver Stick
tournament.
The Crusaders posted a
convincing 8-4 win over the
Hagersville Devils on Dec. 30,
claiming the gold medal in the
tournament.
The win was the fifth of the
tournament for the club, which
started the tournament on Dec. 27
with a 6-2 win over the Dundalk
Storm followed by a 6-5 win over
Flesherton.
On Dec. 28, the squad posted wins
over competition from Arran-
Elderslie Minor Hockey (7-4) and
South Bruce (5-2), earning its berth
in the championship game against
Hagersville.
Head coach Mike Ansley said the
tournament win wasn’t a big surprise
to him or the team, saying the squad
has only posted one loss and one tie
throughout the season, performing
similarly well through tournaments
in the season.
“We’ve been in three tournaments
and won two,” he said. “We went to
Saugeen Shores, and won against
some tough competition from
[Novice B teams].”
The team, however, didn’t fare as
well in a tournament in Minto, being
bested by Arthur, a team that the
Crusaders have traded blows with
throughout the year.
The Silver Stick tournament win
earns the team a berth in the
International Silver Stick
Tournament in Pelham, starting Jan.
10. The squad faces off against
Northumberland, its next scheduled
game, and the Lambeth Lancers on
Jan. 10, and the Penetang Flames on
Jan. 11.
Looking back, Ansley said he
wasn’t surprised that the team is
performing well.
“I figured we had a good team this
year,” he said. “Me and [Assistant
Coach] Derek Cherrey both coached
good Tyke teams two years ago, so I
knew we would have a good squad
this year.”
The Kincardine tournament was
also a high point for Ansley as his
son Rodney earned the top
performer award for each of the
squad’s five games and the Most
Valuable Player (MVP) award for
the final.
As for the next branch of the
Silver Stick tournament this week,
the team held a bottle drive on
Saturday, Jan. 5 to help fund the trip,
raising $1,600 alongside other
donations that are still coming in
according to Sarah Cherrey, wife of
Assistant Coach Derek.
The money will help the team
cover expenses with the tournament,
which could be five days long
depending on how the team does.
