It has been quite a year in
Londesborough with much to be
proud of. Here’s a review of 2018 for
the community.
The Student Advisory Council
committee for Hullett Central Public
School began the daily draws and
awarded prizes as set out on their
fundraiser, a meat calendar. The
group realized in excess of $10,000
for school projects from the calendar
ticket sales.
The Londesborough Lions Club
announced its intention to collect
beverage containers to help Lexi
Merner finance her trip to work with
women on the Maasai-Mara Reserve
in Kenya through the Me to We
organization.
In February, funds realized by the
Londesborough Lions Club from
their Olde Tyme Breakfast were
donated to Huron Residential
Hospice.
Villagers and area folk were sorry
to lose Bert Lyon, someone who had
been a popular figure for over 80
years in the community. Bert was one
of four villagers who passed in 2018.
The village said good-bye to John
Darling and Tim Varey in August and
John Lyons in November.
In March, parts of the village were
without power for a few hours one
snowy morning when a car slid
making a right turn off the highway
and kissed the Fothergill home and
shook up the hydro pole.
Later that month, four members of
the Londesborough Lions Club were
recognized for their years of service
at a ceremony honouring volunteers
in Stratford. Those honoured were
Allan Bosman, Keith Allen, Ian
Hulley and Dorothy Bogie.
In April, Huron County 4-H held
another successful e-recycling
collection in the village on Earth
Day.
The Hullett Central School band
then took part in a mass music day at
Northwestern High School in
Stratford.
Rev. Terry Fletcher entered
hospital for heart surgery and
Londesborough United Church and
Knox United in Auburn began
months of pulpit supply.
A late winter blast of ice and wind
had some villagers along London
Road without hydro for hours.
Profits from the Lions Club’s Olde
Tyme Breakfast want to support
minor sports in the village.
In May, Londesborough United
Church held an entertaining talent
and variety show at the community
hall. Co-emcees Laura Scott and
Harriet Shillinglaw introduced a
variety of instrumental, vocal and
dance acts.
The Robert Hunking family
“owned” the first duck across the
line at the Lions Club’s annual duck
race and won $500.
The Canada Post office at
Radford’s Farm Equipment was
closed and villagers began picking
up their mail at community boxes
situated across from the community
hall.
The Lions Club held another of its
Olde Tyme Breakfasts in June to
celebrate Father’s Day.
Hullett Central School held
graduation ceremonies for 38 Grade
8 students. The young people
enjoyed a weekend together at Camp
Celtic near Lions Head before
heading off in various directions for
the next phase of their education.
Susan Barnett and Allan Bosman
retired from Hullett Central School.
Principal Cathy Goetz moved to
another position in the Avon
Maitland District School Board.
The Sunday School held its year-
end celebration with an outdoor
service and barbecue at the
Londesborough ball diamond. The
community was invited and a ball
game followed lunch.
The congregations of
Londesborough United and Knox
United in Auburn were shocked to
learn of the death of Rev. Fletcher.
In September, Rev. Bill McAuslan
conducted a joint service of
Londesborough United and Knox
Auburn at the Ball’s Chapel.
Kathy Douglas, Youth Minister for
Huron-Perth Presbytery, conducted
a Confirmation Service at
Londesborough United for six
young folk who professed their faith
in front of family and friends.
The Lions Club held another Olde
Tyme Breakfast in October and
would use the funds for upkeep of
the community hall.
Londesborough United Church
held its annual smoked pork chop
supper at the community hall on Oct.
25.
The Glister Children’s Choir of
area singers entertained at the
anniversary service of
Londesborough United Church.
In November for the first time,
veterans were honoured with
banners hung along King’s Road in
front of the school, including
William Little, Jack Snell and
Laurence Taylor.
Hullett Central School held a most
respectful Remembrance Day
service on Nov. 9.
Province-wide test results were
released to schools in Avon
Maitland District School Board.
Hullett pupils in Grades 3 and 6
scored higher in all areas than the
average results in Avon Maitland
District School Board and the
province.
Londesborough United Church
held its bazaar on Saturday, Nov 17.
Then on Sunday, Nov. 18, Sandra
Cable performed the sacrament of
baptism for three young children.
In December, the Me to We group
at Hullett School held a successful
food drive to help Buzz Reynolds fill
the truck he was living in and hoping
to fill for the North Huron Food
Share relief initiative.
Nature’s Nest helped everyone get
in the Christmas spirit with its
“Christmas in the Village” evening.
Visiting with Santa was just one of
the many fun activities folk enjoyed.

Londesborough United held its
White Gift Service on Dec. 2.
