After taking several years off,
Huron County is once again
participating in Culture Days, a
nation-wide initiative to showcase
local arts and culture.
Culture Days across Canada is set
for Sept. 28-30 and there are nearly
30 events taking place throughout
the county, according to Cultural
Development Officer Rick
Sickinger.
The initiative began in 2007,
inspired by the success of an arts-
and-culture-focused weekend in
Quebec. This led to the
commissioning of a study by the
Canadian Arts Summit that led to the
creation of Culture Days.
The weekend begins in Blyth,
where the Fashion Arts and Creative
Textiles Studio (FACTS) will be
hosting a workshop at the Queens
Bakery on Sept. 27 from 7-10 p.m.
led by Jennifer Triemstra-Johnston.
On Friday, Sept. 28, Blackout
Poetry will be held at the Seaforth
Library, the Celtic Blue Highlanders
Ceilidh will perform at the
Kingsbridge Centre, French
Storytime will be held at the
Goderich Library, the Howick-
Turnberry Fall Fair will be on both
Friday and Saturday, it will be “Nerd
Nite” at the Cultural Collective in
Exeter, there will be an open studio
at the Goderich Library from 10 a.m.
to noon, the Maitland Valley Camera
Club will have a photography
exhibit up on display at the Brussels
Library and the FACTS program
will be hosting a “night of
creativity” at the Memorial Hall
Bainton Gallery in Blyth with Peggy
Sue of Peggy Sue Collection,
Michelle Dun of MJ Handmade and
Megan Pottage of Lost Pockets.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, there will
be a production of Ten Lost Years at
the Livery Theatre in Goderich
directed by Blyth’s Duncan
McGregor that will tell the tale of
the Canadian Depression between
1929 and 1939.
The Bayfield Fall Photo Fest will
be held at various locations
throughout Bayfield and there will
be Bayfield Historic Walking Tours
held in the village as well.
The grand opening of the Huron
County Art Show and Sale will take
place from 2-4 p.m. at the Huron
County Museum and Kamden
Gillespie will perform at the Alice
Munro Public Library in Wingham
from 10-11 a.m.
Young musical talent will be on
stage with Live at the Cultural
Collective Lounge in Exeter
Saturday night, while the Maitland
Trail Association will host its annual
El Camino walk, beginning at the
Benmiller Community Hall.
To round out the day, the Seaforth
Harmony Kings will be performing
their 30th anniversary show at
Seaforth Public School at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, Sept. 30, Bayfield
Volkfest will commence at 10 a.m.
on the grounds of the Bayview Golf
Club, while Ciderfest will be held at
the Van Egmond House in
Egmondville from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Forgotten, a documentary telling
the story of over 100,000 British
Home Children coming to Canada,
will be screened at Blyth Memorial
Community Hall at 3 p.m. The
screening will be followed by a
panel discussion with Huron County
descendants those children.
Local historian David Yates will
profile George Agnew Reid, a
Wingham native and famous
Canadian artist who helped found
the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), at
the Alice Munro Public Library in
Wingham at 1 p.m.
Yates will also discuss Charles
“Trick” Currelly, who established
the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM)
and William N. Cresswell, who
settled near Egmondville and is
known for his Canadian landscapes.
Sickinger said that while Huron
County participated in Culture Days
after the program was first
established, participation tailed off
in the last three years due to a
number of factors.
He said that there is so much
happening in Huron’s arts and
culture scene that it was a natural fit
to bring Culture Days back in an
effort to reinvigorate people with the
quality of arts and culture in their
own backyards.
He said that organizers started
their quest to bring the event back by
looking at the weekend and
beginning with events that were
already happening. Once he put the
call out, additional groups and
organizations were more than happy
to be involved.
