The Fashion Arts and Creative Textiles Studio (FACTS) program is moving forward with a number of exciting initiatives according to founder Jennifer Triemstra- Johnston. FACTS is a non-profit arts organization with Triemstra- Johnston as its director who, in an interview with The Citizen, said she wanted to take the program in a new direction with several new classes. Triemstra-Johnston aims to create a hub for fashion arts in Blyth with a focus on textiles through offering classes, studios and workshops for people at every level of experience. FACTS will also endeavour to have networking and community events in hopes of fostering skill training, local resources and other assets supporting sustainable practices. Several courses are scheduled in September and October through FACTS, starting with a weekend full of programming Sept. 15-16 called Natural Dyeing Workshops. “The Dyer’s Garden”, a workshop focused on which garden plants can be used to create dyes and how to create dyes using them is set for Sept. 15. The program will be held at the Blyth Lions Park. Another one-day workshop, “Discover the Natural Dye Palette of Blyth” runs on Sept. 16 and will highlight the plants and resources available in and around Blyth. Attendees will take home enough dyed wool to create a Blyth-inspired project. The workshop will be held at the Blyth Lions Park. Later on in the month, the Fashion Forward Fall 2018 workshops will be held at Blyth Memorial Community Hall as part of the county-wide Culture Days. On Thursday, Sept. 27, FACTS will host an interactive workshop focused on extending the life of clothes called Redesign and Renew your Wardrobe Workshop. Triemstra-Johnston explained the premise of program to The Citizen. “The Thursday night [program] looks at ways to alter, dye, decorate or restyle articles of clothing before sending them to charities or a landfill in an effort to extend the life cycle of a piece of clothing,” she said. On Friday, Sept. 28, three local designers will be explaining their history and how their businesses became part of the Canadian fashion and fibre economy. The workshop is moderated by Triemstra Johnston and will welcome Peggy Sue Deaven-Smiltnieks of the Peggy Sue Collection, Michelle Dun of MJ Handmade and Megan Pottage of Lost Pockets to speak. Moving into October, FACTS will be hosting local fibre artist Kathy White, who had a show at the Blyth Festival Art Gallery this year. White will be running a workshop called Wool Paintings - Create Natural Works of Art with Beeswax and Wool. In it, she will be sharing some of the techniques she uses to create her unique work, according to Triemstra-Johnston, and will work with participants to help them create their own fibre art. The program will be held on Oct. 20 at Blyth Memorial Community Hall. Just in time for Halloween, FACTS and Pick a Posie, Triemstra- Johnston’s commercial costume company, will be offering a Zombie Night and Zombie Day workshops. The programs will teach breakdown and painting techniques with the end goal being to create a zombie costume. With the two classes scheduled for Oct. 26 and 27 at Blyth Memorial Community Hall, the event will allow attendees to choose from historical, vintage or modern zombie looks or bring their own clothes to incorporate into their zombie costumes.
