Festival of Wizardry Saturday tickets now sold out With the Festival of Wizardry just two weeks away, tickets for Saturday’s festivities are sold out, with tickets remaining for only the Friday and Sunday programming at the Blyth campground. If festival-goers do want entry into the grounds on Saturday, they are able to buy VIP passes (though only approximately 200 are left), which gains the buyer access to all three days of the event. While there are prices for those who buy tickets online versus those who pay at the door, the organizers have introduced a third rate for Friday at the festival for students attending through class trips with the Avon Maitland District School Board. Tickets for those students are just $10 each. In an interview with The Citizen, festival founder Nathan Swartz said he’s really encouraged by the ticket sales this year and the level of interest being shown. Last year, when a story about the festival went viral on a Toronto- based blog, tickets flew out the door, he said. This year began a little slower, but the results have been great and are well on the way to what organizers were hoping for. With the inclusion of celebrity Bonnie Wright, known from the Harry Potter films, Swartz said the festival is truly beginning to straddle the line between festival and convention, which opens plenty of doors. Swartz said he is especially excited for the expansion of the Borealis School. While last year classes were held at Memorial Hall, with the expansion of the Blyth Festival season, that isn’t a possibility this year, so classes will be held in two tents, one for “first- year” students and another for the “second-year” students. Aspects that have been improved at this year’s festival include the creation of the School for Magic, doubling the number of vendors, adding commentators with amplified sound to the quidditch tournament, an enhanced scavenger hunt experience (including a world- record attempt on the Saturday), adding more wizarding games including archery tag, paddle boats and a bouncy maze. Some of the musicians from last year’s festival will be returning and the Mudmen, a very popular Ontario band, will be joining the lineup on Saturday. New additions to the Festival of Wizardry include four house tents each with their own unique activity, White’s Wands Wonder Emporium, is filled with wand-activated art, magical wonders, and a mundane artifact museum. The Improv Dandies, an improvisational comedy troupe best known for their “Holodeck Follies,” will be performing a comedy show on Saturday and running some parody panels on the Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday only the ‘Restricted Section’ will offer alcoholic Better Beer and other magical elixirs for witches and wizards 19 years of age or older. Spell Tutor, an award-winning fan fiction series will be showing throughout all three days with chances to interact with Herman Wang, director and producer of the show. Canadian YouTuber Michael Johnson of ‘Reel School’ will be interviewing Bonnie Wright, a screenwriter, director and actress who played Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter movie series. The Festival of Wizardry is being held in Blyth from Sept 21-23 in and around the Blyth Campgrounds. Tickets can be purchased online at Transfiguredtown.com or at Cait’s Cafe in Goderich. Redux The Festival of Wizardry, an annual event focused on fictional, magical worlds, was well received last year by many who attended. This year looks to be a success as well with tickets for one day of the three-day event already sold out. (File photo) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen
