Welcome to all the campers who have come to enjoy the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association weekend from Sept. 7- 9. Welcome to Threshers Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on Sunday, Sept. 2 were Brenda Brooks and Nicole Kerr. Ushering were Nicole Kerr and Brenda Brooks. Marilyn Scott was at the piano and Katie Dockstader was choir director. Emily Phillips reminded everyone of the announcements. The first announcement was that if anyone can help at the Threshers in any way, please call Sharon Bromley at 519- 523-9421. There will be no church service at Blyth United on Sunday, Sept. 9. You are encouraged to go to the service in Shed 3 at the Thresher Reunion. Church services will resume on Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. Emily introduced and welcomed Elly Dow as guest speaker. Elly lit the Christ Candle on the altar table. The first hymn “For the Beauty of the Earth” was sung. The call to worship was said responsively. The children’s story was entitled, “Are We Almost There?” Many of us with small children can relate to this phrase “Are We There Yet?” Children are no sooner in the car when someone will ask are we there yet. Jesus simplifies the 10 Commandments for us, like “Thou shall love the Lord thy God and remember to keep the seventh day holy” and on His death He added one more, “to love one another”. Jesus loved everyone. Elly told a story of a little girl holding two apples. Her mother asked if she could have one and immediately the little girl took a bite out of each one. She then said to her mother as she handed her an apple, this one is sweeter. The Gospel reading was from Mark 7:24-30, the story of a mother asking Jesus to heal her daughter. The choir sang the anthem “Lord Be With Us On This Day.“ The story told of a little girl with a big piece of paper and crayons who said she was drawing a picture of God. The hymn “I, the Lord of Sea and Sky” was sung. The offering was received followed by the offertory response “Your Work, O God , Needs Many Hands,” the offertory prayer, the singing of “God Our Protector” leading into the prayers for the people and silent prayers and the singing of the Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn, “We Are Pilgrims On a Journey” was followed by the benediction and the singing of the response “One More Step Around the World I Go.” Everyone was invited for coffee and to visit with Elly and Ivan, her husband. (Charles Spurgeon) “This is love: that we walk in obedience to His commands.” 2 John 1:6 Love to God is the spring of true obedience to God. One who is not obedient to His commandments, is evidently not a true believer; for although good works do not save us--yet, being saved, believers are sure to produce good works. Though the fruit is not the root of the tree--yet a well-rooted tree will, in its season, bring forth its fruits. So, though the keeping of the commandments does not make me a child of God--yet, being a child of God, I shall be obedient to my heavenly Father. But this I cannot be, unless I love God. A mere external formal obedience--is not sincere obedience in God’s sight. He abhors the sacrifice, where the heart is not found. I must obey Him because I love Him--or else I have not truly obeyed at all. See then, that to produce the indispensable fruits of saving faith--there must be sincere love for God. “If you love Me, you will obey what I command.” John 14:15 “Whoever has My commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves Me.” John 14:21 “If anyone loves Me, he will obey My teaching.” John 14:23 “He who does not love me will not obey My teaching.” John 14:24 A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 NEWS FROM BLYTH By Marilyn Craig Call 523-9318 From Marilyn’s Desk Elly Dow speaks at United Church Busy place Jellybean Blue, featuring the talents of Capucine Onn on violin and Kevin Carney on guitar, played at the Blyth Artisan Market last week. (Denny Scott photo) Steffler Foundation set to run suicide awareness event As a service to the Huron County community, the Tanner Steffler Foundation is bringing a special SafeTALK course to Seaforth on Saturday, Sept. 15. SafeTALK is a course that prepares anyone over the age of 16 to identify the actions or words of someone who may be suicidal thoughts. In addition, the course will train those interested to connect those people with life-saving support. John Steffler, Tanner’s father and one of the founders of the foundation, said that bringing this program to Seaforth fits perfectly in the foundation’s mandate, which is education and keeping the children of the community safe. The course, which costs $15 per person (the regular fee is $35 per person), doesn’t require those who take it to have previous experience, they only need to be ready and willing to be a suicide alert helper. It does require pre-registration, however, which can be done by calling 519-670-1940 or e-mailing the events team at the foundation in the coming days. John and his wife Heather have both taken the course earlier this year in Exeter and in the months since, Heather has kept in touch with the instructor in the hopes of hosting one of the workshops closer to home. He said the event will be another brought to the community by the foundation which will hopefully continue to raise awareness and educate members of the public on matters of mental health pertaining to young Huron County residents. Furthermore, John said, the foundation has reached a milestone in its journey by officially being granted its charitable status. This means that those who donate to the charity will now receive tax receipts for their donation. The upgrade in status, he said, will also allow the foundation to expand its scope and increase its programming.
