McMahon learns much from time at CNE
After a full year as the Brussels
Fall Fair Ambassador, Erin
McMahon’s duties in the position
have drawn to a close after a
performance at the Canadian
National Exhibition (CNE) that will
make her hometown supporters
proud.
McMahon and dozens of other
Ontario Ambassadors were at the
CNE over the weekend as the judges
were on a mission to find the next
CNE Ambassador.
While McMahon and her
contemporaries from District 8 were
set to arrive in style, packing into a
limousine to travel to Toronto, traffic
in Canada’s most populous city had
other plans.
The girls were stuck in traffic and
due to meet with the judges later that
evening – they were the first group
to do so – so they had to get out of
the car in the middle of the street
with their luggage and walk the rest
of the way to their hotel.
Once they were settled at the
hotel, the girls had to make their way
to the judges as soon as they could to
be interviewed.
McMahon said that being among
the first to be interviewed was a little
nervewracking (not to mention the
unplanned walking detour the girls
had to take) but she quickly got into
a groove and felt as though she
performed well throughout the
interview process.
The judges asked McMahon about
herself and why she thought she
would make a good CNE
Ambassador. They also asked her
what she would do to help clean up
the environment and about some of
the life experiences she’s endured
that have helped shape her into the
young woman she is today.
McMahon said she told the judges
that she is very independent and has
the skills to take care of herself,
which has helped make her a strong
person.
Later in the weekend, McMahon
performed her speech, which was
about life on the farm, on the stage.
She said she was nervous being on
stage near the beginning, but then
relaxed as her speech concluded.
Also over the course of the
weekend, McMahon and her fellow
ambassadors took in several
different seminars, including those
on communication and careers in
agriculture, among others.
She said she had a great weekend
and took the time to not only learn
some life skills in Toronto, but also
to connect with some of the other
ambassadors, making friends that
will last a lifetime.
She also made sure to take in the
CNE when she had free time, as it
was her first time to the historic
Toronto event.
While McMahon didn’t come out
as the competition’s winner, she said
she is proud of her district, which is
clearly well-prepared for the event,
boasting three of the final seven
contestants, including Central
Huron’s Joleen Otten, who was
named first runner-up, second only
to Vanessa Riddell of Milverton.
A story to tell
While every Fall Fair Ambassador learns at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE)
Ambassador competition, the friendships and the stories are often the most valuable things
gained at the event. Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador Erin McMahon, left, for example, will
forever remember the story of how she and her fellow area ambassadors had to ditch their
limo in Toronto traffic and hoof it to their hotel to make their competition interview deadlines.
While McMahon didn’t claim victory, one of her contemporaries did and another came close.

eventual winner of the coveted crown and sash. (Photo submitted)
A productive trip
Erin McMahon, left, finished her duties as Brussels Fall Fair
Ambassador over the weekend by competing at the
Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) Ambassador contest.
While she didn’t win, McMahon enjoyed seminars covering
a variety of topics including agriculture and communication
skills, and took advantage of great networking
opportunities with her fellow competitors. McMahon was
joined on the trip by Hannah McCutcheon, a former
Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador herself. (Photo submitted)
