Change is in the air. Like all of our
reactions and thoughts for our days,
attitude determines how we see and
react to the things life puts in our
sights. So as we wind down the days
of August, we can celebrate all the
good times we had these past few
weeks or we can glumly mutter
about summer being over. The
arrival of September can be
anticipated as a new month, a new
season, new days or we can moan
that winter will soon be here. Life is
90 per cent attitude and with that
comes our view of the changing
world and what we share with
community.
We have had a good time lately
catching up on the lives of the
Watson crew. Andrew has been busy
using his nursing skills at various
spots in our land so a chance to hear
his view of the world had us picking
him up in Toronto and heading east.
Mike and Val were camping on the
Mississippi River in Lanark County
with Balderson and Perth nearby. So
we three joined Mike and Val,
Lindsay and Craig, Zac and Chey for
a fun few days mostly in or on the
river. The Mississippi is a wide,
flowing river with a good variety of
fish. It’s an excellent swimming spot
and a great place to cool off. Once
again the joy of being grandparents
is watching the changes that happen
as kids move into the adult world.
What a blessing.
Walton TransCan weekend was
blessed with great weather this year,
so it was much more enjoyable for
all involved. The good weather had
many of them visiting Brussels for
supplies or entertainment. I was at
5R’s on Saturday and was kept quite
busy. On questioning about
postcards, I remembered a box of
postcards leftover from the early
farmers’ market days. They had fun
and questions as a little girl and her
parents searched through and left
smiling at their choices of several of
the heritage pictures. One grandma
will also smile as she accepts some
vintage music and heritage pictures
as her birthday present this year.
Sunday afternoon was a pleasant
time to tour Riverside Funeral Home
to appreciate all the hard work Zoey
and Thom have invested in this past
year. This open house time showed
the improvements with good effect.
New windows, lots of new light,
great bathrooms and many neat
touches show their combined talents.
We’re happy you came to Brussels.
As I’m getting this column ready
to go, I’m thinking about Leona
Armstrong. Our lives intertwined
over many years in many places. She
was one of the few people who
actually called or gave me a note to
share with The Citizen. If you called
Leona friend, you knew her and
appreciated her gifts that she so
willingly shared with others. Her
celebration of life was her efficient
way of letting us know her life was
good. We need to take it as a
reminder to share what we have, be
positive, make plans and then get at
it.
So, as we smile and remember
Leona, use her life as your example
and make your world better.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Riverside Funeral Home hosts open house
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It has been a quiet week at the
Brussels Legion Branch after what
was a very busy week. It’s now time
for all to relax. A reminder for
anyone wishing to see the Provincial
Service Officer coming in October,
you need to contact the Branch
Service Officer, Mabel Glanville,
519-887-9086, as soon as possible,
to get an appointment.
We are still looking for a couple of
folks to help run the Saturday
afternoon euchres. The euchres are
every two weeks, but if you could
help once a month, it would be great.
The time frame is 12:15-about 3:30
p.m. The euchres return on Sept. 15,
so there is plenty of time to give the
Branch a call and volunteer!
We are still working on the new
Catch the Ace licence and hopefully,
it will be back by mid-September as
well.
The Sunday night dance had a
small crowd enjoy the music of one
of the popular bands, the Country
Versatiles. Very unusual, but many
things are going on in the summer
and people can’t be everywhere!

Zoellyn Onn, left, and Thom Chisholm, right, have put significant effort into modernizing the
Riverside Funeral Home since they took it over last year. On Sunday, Onn and Chisholm,
along with Chisholm’s children (Onn’s stepchildren), Lochlann and Kyra, welcomed people
with an open house to show off the changes. (Denny Scott photo)
Accompaniment
Whether it’s grabbing a snack, browsing the wares or shopping for vegetables for the week,
the Brussels Farmers’ Market at the Four Winds Barn offers a multitude of shopping options
and does so with some musical accompaniment. Above, Glenn Hodgins performs during last
week’s market. (Shawn Loughlin photo)Browse Huron County events
