S ports Blyth Midgets earn split By Rusty Blades The Blyth Midgets split two league games recently as they travelled to Milverton on Dec. 9 and frustrated the home team 5-3 before getting bombed at home 7-0 by Wingham on Dec. 17. Against Milverton it was a three period game with Blyth winning period one and period three and Milverton controlling the middle frame. Henry Bos, who has struggled through an injury plagued season, opened the scoring with six minutes remaining in the first. He deftly tipped in Ryan Chamney's shot for his first goal of the year. Eleven seconds later, Brian McNichol doubled the score after some strong forechecking by wingers Christopher Howson and Tim Lyons. Blyth coasted in the middle stanza as Milverton took a 3-2 lead with three unanswered tallies, including two power play markers. Blyth regained control in the third as they staged a comeback for the victory. Chamney, assisted by Lyons and Ben Hakkers, deadlocked the contest 3-3 one and a half minutes into the period as he slid on in on the short side. Tim Cowan, whose goal scoring theory revolves around quality not quantity, rifled home the game winner just over two minutes later. "Teemu" took a pass from Lyons as he cruised through the slot and whistled one upstairs into the top shelf. Although the puck picked up a speeding ticket on the way in, the goal stood and "Teemu" Cowan had his first goal of the season. Lyons, with his fourth assist of the game, and Chamney assisted on the insurance goal with eight minutes remaining in the game while enjoying a power play. They fed the puck to McNichol who drilled a long shot past a startled opposition crease keeper and Blyth fmished up with a 5-3 win. It was a different story against Wingham however as Wingham scored on every second shot in blanking the locals 7-0. The players who showed up put in a gritty performance but they were no match for the visitors in this game. Wingham took the air out of the Blyth sails with four first period goals and after that it was just a matter of waiting for the final buzzer. Hopefully order will be restored soon as the team heads into the toughest part of their schedule. Atoms win 7-4 over Bayfield Belgrave Ato-ms proved to be unwelcome guests when they visit- ed Bayfield recently defeating the home team by a score of 7-4. Blyth Novice tie A low scoring, evenly-matched hockey game was played Dec. 16, when Blyth Novice hosted Milverton. Cole Stewart netted both Blyth goals. On the first goal, Nicholas Courtney and Neil Salverda were awarded the assists. Stewart's second goal came after a fine effort of intercepting the puck at his own blue line, weaving past the opposition, and successfully ending the breakaway by scoring on goalie Jeremy Matheson. Milverton came back with only 40 seconds remaining in the third period. Robbie Archambault blocked the initial shot, however, momentum carried the puck up and over him into the net to end the game at 2-2 tie. Blyth Tykes lose to Elma Logan On Dec. 16, the Blyth Tykes travelled to Monkton, to play Elma Logan. Justin Peters put forth a great effort and scored all four goals for Blyth. Two goals were unassisted, while two came from the speedster, beginner Josh Albrechtas. Monkton scored eight times, despite some exceptional goaltending by Taylor Hesselwood, who faced an incredible number of challenging shots throughout the game. A fine effort was made by both teams, with Monkton playing a well organized, speedy game which kept a lot of the play away from their goalie, Brennan Yundt, although he made some key stops to keep their team ahead. Friday night Brussels exploded for seven first period goals enroute to an 8-4 win in Wiarton. J.C. Hewitt and Brad Carter scored two each with singles from Tim Fritz, Mike Betties, Dean Nicholson and Brian Campbell. Campbell's goal came on a penalty shot attempt with less than two minutes remaining to end a Wiarton comeback attempt Sunday night in Brussels the Crusaders surprised the Elora Rocks with an 8-6 victory. Betties, Hewitt and Carter scored two each with Corey McKee and Steve Fritz adding singles. Trev Fortune took the win Friday while Derek Cooper was in goal Sunday. The Crusaders are idle until Sunday, Jan. 2 when the Arthur Tigers are in town for a 3:00 start. ° .*.*-* * * 0O ° * ) The staff of Biyth Decorating Centre wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year 180 Queen St. Blyth 523-4930 We we a FULL SERVICE Paint and Decorating store Let US help you wirn your aeorYarino problems we can save yOu time ana money St PitErt7 Clalaan. a a Thank you for your continued support.
