- 550 hear 'Messiah'
The Blyth Festival Singers had
an attendance of 550 at the
performance of Handel's Messiah
on Sunday, Dec. 5, at the First
Presbyterian Church, in Seaforth.
The guests soloists gave excellent
performances and the instrument
players added much to the
occasion. The choir responded
well to director Wade Whittaker's
sensitive interpretation of the music
and both he and Carol Carter,
organist, received enthusiastic
applause at the close of the
performance.
The choir had practiced steadily
since September under the direction
of Mr. Whittaker. It was quite
evident that this first performance
of the entire Messiah in Huron
County was much enjoyed by the
audience who gave the performers
an enthusiastic standing ovation
after the finale.
Guest artists were Leslie Jost,
soprano; Cheryll Harrison, alto;
John de Joeger, tenor; Robert
Towers, bass; Chris Adair,
Timpani; Ann Marier McQuaid-
Snider, violin and Dave Manning,
trumpet.
Wade Whittaker is the conductor
of the Blyth Festival Singers and
Carol Carter, the accompanist.

Social worker, Auxiliary guest
The guest speaker for the
November meeting of the Auxiliary
to Wingham and District Hospital
was Mr. Tim Sullivan, social
worker, who joined the hospital
staff recently.
Mr. Sullivan's position includes
the task of discharge planning
which includes assessing the needs
of patients. Singing and playing
guitar in the lounge help create a
different environment for the
patient and is part of the
reactivation program run by Mr.
Sullivan. Working with the
physiotherapist and kinesiologist to
stimulate the patient and get them
moving about is another job.
Mr. Sullivan is a therapist and
counsellor and does in and out-
patient counselling working along
with doctors. Children can be
referred as well as families for
counselling. Mr. Sullivan worked
with street kids in Toronto for two
years broadening his experience
with teenagers. Connecting cancer
patients with a social worker, if
necessary, at the London cancer
clinic is another aspect of Mr.
Sullivan's job.
Isobel Arbuckle thanked Mr.
Sullivan for his informative talk.
The award to a student at F.E.
Madill furthering their education in
nursing was presented by President
Marlene Leedham on Oct. 9. The
award went to two students
Charlotte Schiestel and Laura
White. Both are teen volunteers at
the hospital.
A Broda wheelchair was
purchased by the auxiliary and
presented at the meeting to Bill
Woodley, Director of Nursing.
With the open weave seating,
which lets the air circulate, and
back, which can be adjusted to any
position, the chair is an
improvement over the old models.
Marlene Leedham, attended the
HAAO 1993 Conference in
Toronto. The theme of the
conference was Thriving on
Change. Several workshops were
attended.
Christmas stockings have been
made and will be distributed to
babies born two weeks previous to
Christmas. The hospital staff will
be served Christmas treats on Dec.
3. The hospital will also be
decorated for the Christmas season
by the auxiliary. Christmas tray
favours have been made by St.
Andrews Presbyterian Church in
Wingham.
The Fall Rummage Sale brought
in $1,748.90.
The next meeting will be Jan. 24
and the speaker is Kim Douglas.
The Huron County Library has
issued a news release informing all
in the county of the shutdown over
the holiday season.
This shutdown is in response to
Social Contract demands for unpaid
days off, placed on them by the
province and Huron County.
All branches in Huron County
will be closed between Christmas
and the New Year, and they invite
everyone to stock up on holiday
reading and listening material prior
to Dec. 24.
Any branch which has Friday
hours will be closed by 2 p.m. on
Christmas Eve.
Book drop-off services will also
be closed during that week so
lenders are asked to hold onto their
books until the libraries re-open.
All due dates for material will be
adjusted to accommodate the shut-
down.
Services will return to normal
during the week of Jan. 3.
