McNevan gets hat trick
against Walkerton
Brussels Bulls' captain Greg
McNevan broke out of a scoring
slump Sunday in a big way to help
the Bulls beat the Walkerton
Blackhawks 7 - 3. The veteran
winger scored three times and set
up two others. McNevan had
scored five goals in the first three
games of the season but then failed
to score in 13 straight games. The
win puts Brussels in fourth, a point
ahead of the Hawks. The Bulls also
have a game in hand on Walkerton.
Nate Bender had two goals while
Jeremy Beirnes and Jason Baier
added singles. Brian Zabel chipped
in with three assists.
Coach Scott Pettigrew says it was
an important two points. "It was
nice to see some of our big guns get
on track. We drove to the net better
today than we have all season and
it paid off."
The Bulls actually had a chance
to move up two spots in the
standings but fell short Friday night
against Hanover. The Barons
handed the Bulls a 7-4 setback.

The Blyth Midgets played three
league games last week as they
won against Listowel II and Exeter
II but lost against Elma-Logan.
Blyth hosted Listowel II on Dec.
1 and simply blew them off the
pond in a 15-1 drubbing. Everyone
participated in the scoring parade
including goalie Chris Lee, who
garnered from his 4' x 6' cord
cottage. Goal scorers for Blyth
were Ryan Chamney and Brian
McNichol with four each, with
single goals recorded by Casey
Boven, Peter Craig, Christopher
Howson, Jason Heipel, Tim Lyons
and Ben Hakkers.
Blyth then hosted Elma-Logan
on Dec. 3 as the visitors wore down
Justin Rinn, of the Blyth Novice
Hockey team, opened the scoring
against Seaforth II team on Sunday,
Dec. 5 at Clinton.
Less than a minute later, the
dynamic defensive duo of Cole
Stewart and Nicholas Courtney
scored, after a picture perfect pass
from Bradley Schmidt landed on
Nicholas's stick and he floated the
puck up and over Seaforth goalie
Curt Agar's right shoulder.
Blyth showed great eagerness for
their coach Tom Jarrett, trainer
Dana Bean and helper Neil
Salverda, however the well-called
off-side whistles stymied some of
their rushes and the play would
have to be restarted outside the blue
line.
Rinn netted his second goal, with
assists going to the hard-working

Baler fired a pair while Darin
Alviano and Zabel also found the
net. The Bulls trail Hanover in the
race for third by three points but
also have a game in hand on the
Barons.
"We took some bad penalties in
the second period and they scored
three powerplay goals. That was
the turning point," said Mr.
Pettigrew
Friday night the Bulls travel to
Mt. Forest to take on the first place
Patriots. The last time the two clubs
met they tied 3-3. Saturday night,
the Bulls will be home, but they
won't. A broomball tournament has
resulted in the Bulls moving their
game with Walkerton to the
Monkton arena. Game time is 8:00.

the hometowners in the third and
staged a late game comeback to
Blyth 6-4. Blyth opened a 2-0 lead
two minutes into the game as first
Wilfred Datema drilled a hard
drive from Lyons and then Heipel
converted a centering pass from
Hakkers.
Elma-Logan tied the game
midway through the second period
but Blyth regained the lead with
three and one half minutes
remaining in the period. Chamney
sent Heipel and Hakkers in on a
two on one break with Hakkers
cashing in for the goal.
Elma-Logan notched a power
play goal to tie the game 3-3 with
seven minutes remaining in the
third but Blyth took the lead again
playmaker Kirk Stewart, and his
solid defenseman Andrew Toll.
Michael Bean got into the action,
scoring unassisted, by pulling a
Wendell Clark trick of banking the
puck off the opposing defense
player's skate, redirecting it past the
Seaforth goalie.
With Eric Jarrett winning the
face-offs, Neil Salverda and Shaun

Elma-Logan turned the tables on
Blyth as they took a 5-4 lead with
two goals in 33 seconds. They
added an insurance marker with
two minutes remaining in the game
and upset Blyth 6-4.
Blyth travelled to Exeter on Dec.
4 where they recovered from their
collapse against Elma-Logan and
finished a hectic week of hockey
with a relatively easy 7-4 victory.

were stopped by Seaforth, to keep
this trio off the scoreboard this
game.
The final notch was made by
Rinn, who performed the hat-trick,
with the assistance of Kirk Stewart
and Tyler Wilson.
Robbie Archambault, the
sometimes lonesome goalie, played
a solid game with some key saves,
by making the right stops at the
right time, to record his shut-out.
