Theatre Review
Audience can identify with Peggy and Grace
On the road
The delightful Lighthouse Festival Theatre presentation of
Peggy & Grace was performed at Blyth Memorial Hall to
near capacity crowd. Araby Lockhart, left, played solid, no
nonsense Grace opposite Miriam Newhouse's good-time
Peggy.
would prefer to spend her hours
dancing, singing, gambling or just
about anything which involves a lot
of people and noise.
As the pair travels across the
United States, the obvious conflicts
arise, with very humourous, yet
realistic results.
The relationship develops into an
almost mother/daughter situation.
Grace is the grounded one who
tries to keep Peggy in line; Peggy's
reaction is to sit and pout.
When the pair become lost on a
lonely stretch of highway in Utah,
thanks to Peggy's navigational
skills, a young man, Sam, comes to
their aid.
Peggy is quickly taken in by the
southern accent, the good looks and
the seemingly helpful hand.
Sam, played by Robert Kennedy,
is able to convince the ladies to
give him a ride and to spend a few
days in Las Vegas. Peggy is
thrilled.
Soon they fmd that Sam's helping
hand has helned himself to their
money and jewels when they refuse
to take him to Mexico for a drug
purchase.
This brings back haunting memo-
ries for Grace and she reveals to
Peggy a long-hidden secret.
The effect of the robbery and
physical assault by Sam also causes
Peggy to take a sobering look at her
behaviour.
Once again Grace is the strong
one, reassuring Peggy that every-
thing will be alright and that
because they have each other they
can carry on.
Peggy too has found strength
through the experience. She helps
Grace confront her secret with tfie
knowledge that her friend will
always be there for support.
Through laughter, tragedy and
triumph, the friends can make it
through.
Araby Lockhart hails from
Toronto and has performed in such
productions as The Tomorrow Box,
The Gin Game. Sinners and Cent?-
narian Rhyme as well as on T.V.
Miriam Newhouse is involved in
several areas of theatre, having
acted, directed and written in Cana-
da, United States, Britain, Denmark
and Holland. Her film credits
include Dead Ringers and Stella.
Robert Kennedy ,has been
involved in four projects with the
Lighthouse Festival, including The
War Show, The Growing Season
and Dead Serious. His television
credits include Katts & Dog,
Matrix and Street Legal.
ntertainment
In the darkened theatre, bluegrass
music begins to play and a series of
slides flash on the screen portray-
ing the life and times of two long-
time friends.
The near-capacity crowd at
Blyth Memorial Hall on Nov. 28
was presented with glimpses of the
joys and trials in the lives of Peggy
& Grace as they marry and raise
families together.
The lights come up and there
stand two ladies, in their late 60s,
in front of a mobile home. The pair
has sold everything to buy the Win-
nebago and travel, to recapture
some of the excitement and unpre-
dictability of youth, lost after more
than 30 years of marriage.
The comic portrayal is easily
identifiable and true-to-life. The
interaction between the friends is
very believable and a pleasure to
watch.
The two women are played by
Araby Lockhart (Grace) and Miri-
am Newhouse (Peggy).
The interaction between Ms
Lockhart and Ms Newhouse is
wonderful. It is very easy to identi-
fy them with seniors I've known.
Though quite diverse in character,
there may be a little of them in all
seniors. They are straightforward
and upfront yet they each hold onto
the ethics taught them as young
girls (though they have very differ-
ent ways of expressing them).
With widowhood and the free-
dom to travel, Grace longs for
peace and quiet, to be able to wile
away the hours painting, Peggy
