Blyth Midgets claim Regional Silver Stick B
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets participated
in the Wingham Regional Silver
Stick Tournament last weekend.
They won their round-robin
grouping with Howick, Hensall and
Normanby before losing their semi-
final game against Chatsworth 3-1.
This put Blyth into the Consolation
Championship game on Sunday
against Tavistock. The short staffed
team put together a gritty effort as
they claimed the Consolation
Championship with a well deserved
3-1 count.
Blyth opened the tournament on
Thursday, Nov. 25 where they lost
a tight checking game to Howick
Howick scored all the goals
they needed in the second period
with Blyth scoring their only goal
of the game early in the third while
enjoying a player advantage. Ryan
Chamney and Wilfred Datema
assisted on Peter Craig's blueline
blast.
Blyth then tangled with Hensall
on Saturday morning capitalizing
on the undisciplined Hensall play
and bombed their league rivals 8-2.
Blyth outscored Hensall 2-1 in the
first period and scored three
unanswered second period tallies
for a commanding 5-1 lead after.
two.
The fireworks erupted as Blyth
increased that lead in the first
minute of the third period. Four
Hensall players hit the showers
early and Blyth easily finished out
the period for an 8-2 victory. Brian
McNichol paced the winners with a
hat-trick while defence players
Jonathan Collins drilled home two
powerplay bombs from the
blueline. Tim Lyons had a big
game as he scored the breakaway
goal which started the fireworks
Ind added two earlier assists.
The line of Jason Heipel,
Chamney and Ben Hakkers set the
tone early with some great team
play. Heipel notched two goals and
an assist, Chamney contributed
four assists with Hakkers adding a
pair of helpers.
Blyth then advanced against the
previously unbeaten Normanby in
their final round-robin game
needing a win to advance to the
tournament semi-finals. And win
they did, scoring two late empty net
goals on their way to a 6-3 triumph.
Blyth had the lead all game as
Normanby played catch-up
throughout, before the final minute
empty-netters. After a scoreless
first frame Chamney backhanded
home the game opening goal 10
minutes into the second. Normanby
tied the game late in the period but
Chamney, assisted by Collins and
Danny Gibbings, gave Blyth the
lead on a power play three and a
half minutes into period three.
Normanby quickly tied the game
again but Blyth never let up and
Collins assisted on Gibbings' go
ahead goal 39 seconds later.
Less than two minutes later
Datema and Christopher Howson
assisted on Craig's power play
insurance marker. Normanby cut
the lead to 4-3 with less than three
minutes remaining in the game.
Normanby pulled their goalie late
in the game but McNichol took the
wind out of their sails with two
empty net goals in the game's final
minute, with Craig earning an assist
on the first.
This 6-3 win ended the round
robin, as Blyth, Normanby and
Howick all finished with two wins
and one loss. Each team also won a
game against one of the others so
the tie-breaking formula was
dividing the total goals into the
goals for. Because of Blyth's 8-2
rout of Hensall, they emerged with
the highest percentage to take first,
with Howick edging Normanby for
second.
