Blyth Midgets glide to 10-5 win
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets played two
games last week travelling to
Wingham, Nov. 16 where they
were bombed 10-3 then hosting
Milverton on Nov. 19 turning the
tables and playing an overpowering
game, for a 10-5 victory.
Against Wingham things started
in Blyth's favour but the game
turned ugly by the third period as
Blyth's play totally fell apart. Ryan
Chamney finished off Danny
Gibbings and Jason Heipel's
passing with the first goal as Blyth
took a 1-0 lead in the second
minute of the game. Less than a
minute and a half later, Brian
McNichol upped the count by two.
He provided a hit at the Wingham
blueline which caused a loose puck
that Ben Hakkers relayed to
McNichol. He then deked both the
opposition's defenceman and the
crease keeper before backhanding
the puck along the ice and into the
net.
Wingham tied the game later in
the period and put Blyth on the
ropes with three unanswered
second period tallies.
Blyth, while enjoying a two man
power play, inched to 5-3 early in
the third as Heipel provided the
thrills with assists to Chamney and
McNichol.
Blyth packed up and went home
after the goal as Wingham scored
five straight, including two
shorthanded efforts, to easily
outdistance fhe visitors.
Blyth goaltender Chris Lee
provided solid goaltending early
but the defence abandoned him late
in the game. Included in the game
was a successful penalty shot stop
by Blyth's Lee early in the first
period.
Against Milverton on Friday
night, Blyth rebounded from a 3-0
first period deficit and used six
power play goals to frustrate the
Milverton squad.
Chamney put Blyth on the
scoreboard three seconds into a
powerplay late in the first period as
he won the faceoff to Wilfred
Datema and then deflected
Datema's shot into the net.
Datema and Hakkers assisted on
Blyth's second power play goal
early in the second as Jonathan
Collins picked up his own rebound
and rifled a slapshot upstairs.
Although Milverton scored next,
the hometowners responded with
three straight goals, including two
more man-advantage efforts, to
take their first lead of the game
before the second period ended.
Hakkers and Peter Craig assisted
on Blyth's third goal as Chamney
found a home for the rebound of
Craig's point shot.
Tim Cowan set the tying goal in
motion as he sent Tim Lyons and
Christopher Howson in on a two-
on-one break with Lyons lighting
the red light. Craig then got things
rolling for the go-ahead goal. He
passed to Chamney who rushed the
puck, left a drop pass for Heipel to
double pump a slapshot for a 5-4
lead with 15 seconds remaining.
Two early third period powerplay
goals by Chamney left little doubt
as to who was going to win this
contest. Lyons assisted on both
while Heipel assisted on the first
and Hakkers assisted on the second.
The Milverton defence
abandoned the goalie late in the
game as Blyth controlled play in all
zones and skated unmolested
through the slot for three late goals.
With just under four minutes to
play Cowan set up Lyons. One
minute later Heipel assisted on
Chanmey's fifth goal of the game.
The game scored was completed
with 34 seconds remaining as
Hakkers set up Heipel's shot from
deep in the slot. Chamney re-
directed the puck out of the air, past
a weary visiting puckstopper for his
sixth goal, and seventh point, of the
game.
This victory should provide some
confidence for the team as they
participate in the Wingham
Regional Silver Stick Midget
Tournament later this week.
