Father, son greet at CRC
Greeters at Christian Reformed
Church in Blyth on Sunday
morning, Nov. 21 were Mike
Siertsema and his son Luke. Ushers
were Denise Ten Pas and Richard
Burgsma.
Opening the service with the call
to worship and Gods greeting was
guest minister Rev. Miedema from
Clinton Christian Reformed
Church, after which "Sing Praise to
the Lord God Almighty" was sung.
Following the reading of the Ten
Commandments from Exodus 20,
focusing on verse seven "not to
take the name of God in vain", "At
the Name of Jesus" was sung and
Psalm 8 and Ephesians 4: 29-32
were read.
The sermon titled "Speech
Therapy" began by stating how
important a name is; how good it
feels when someone remember our
name and uses it, or how badly we
feel when a name is known but not
used or is mispronounced. God
feels just as sensitive about the
misuse of His name, said Rev.
Miedema.
He explained how swearing
blames God for what has happened
like hurts or suffering which are
results of "original" sin and this
also misrepresents God. Rev.
Miedema said to prevent this use of
expletives, punctuate sentences for
effectiveness, start at an early age
to develop language for descriptive
words to better express ourselves.
Another speech therapy
mentioned by Rev. Miedema, is
Jesus Christ, in a heart response tc
His death on the cross, forgiveness
of sins, and a personal relationship
with Him.
Other ways of misusing God's
name is the meaningless listless use
of it in church when singing or
praying without thinking, said Rev.
Miedema. He also explained how
name dropping or using God's
name so as to be more acceptable
to people, is misuse. Then, just as
sinful, is not using God's name at
all; by being silent bystanders in
issues as pro-life, Christian
education, and the Christian
Farmers Federation.
How do we use God's name
asked Rev. Miedema. Only with
reverence and awe so that we may
properly confess Him in everyday
life at home and at work. We can
pray to Him, said Rev. Miedema.
This is God's soft spot and gets
answers.
Rev. Miedema concluded by
saying we can praise Him in
everything we do and say. This is
the best speech therapy there is!
The congregation closed the
service by singing "Lord, Our Lord,
Your Glorious Name!"
