Collect call from Jurassic age
beckons to 'Listen to the Bones'
It's "back to our roots" as the
Children's Series of the Blyth
Centre for the Arts Festival of
Entertainment showcases the
nationally-acclaimed Listen to the
Bones at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21.
Listen to the Bones starts as a
mysterious collect telephone call
from the Jurassic age, beckoning us
to learn more about dinosaurs from
all angles — the playful, the historic,
the scientific, the sentimental, the
dramatic and the mystical, and ends
with a firm environmental lesson
warning us not to change the Earth
and cause our own extinction.
It's educational, yes, but this
snappy show will have adult toes
tapping, along with tinier tootsies,
to the funky rap tunes of Cathy
Nosaty, one of the three creators
and performers who, along with
mime Heidi Hunter and dancer
Judy Cook, have taken their
enthusiasm across the continent,
playing to sell-out audiences in
Toronto's concert halls and one-
room school houses in the Yukon.
Tickets for this "blast from the
Jurassic past" are just $7 per
person, for one show only, Sunday,
Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. in the Blyth
Memorial Hall. To order your
reserved seats, phone the box office
at 523-9300, or toll-free at 1-800-
263-3378.

Singers rehearse 'Messiah'
The Blyth Festival Singers are
presenting the Messiah by G. F.
Handel at First Presbyterian Church
in Seaforth on Sunday, Dec. 5 at
2:30 p.m. This will be the first time
that a local choir has performed the
complete cantata in Huron County.
Under the direction of conductor
Wade Whittaker, the 60-voice choir
has eagerly embraced the challenge
of this wonderful Christmas classic
since rehearsals began last spring.
Three guest soloists will perform
with the choir: Leslie Jost, soprano;
Cheryll Harrison, alto; and Robert
Towers, bass.
A graduate of the University of
Toronto, Leslie Jost has studied in
New York, Italy and Germany.
Other performances this fall
include guest soloist in Bach's
Mass in F Minor with the K-W
Chamber Choir. Ms Jost is vocal
coach of the Stratford Boy Choir,
living in nearby St. Mary's with her
husband, director Doug Beattie,
and son.
Cheryll Harrison is a vocal
graduate of the University of
Western Ontario. She has
performed in the Messiah with
Orchestra London as well as in
numerous theatre and opera
productions, including a recent
performance of the "Stephen
Sondheim Revue." The mother of
three is also a voice teacher.
A Masters graduate in choral
conducting, from the University of
Western Ontario, soloist Robert
Towers is a skilled organist whose
musical talents are well-known in
the London region. His most recent
solo appearances include the
Schubert Mass in A Flat, alongside
Lois Marshall, the Verdi Requiem,
Handel's Messiah, and Bach's Mass
in G Major.
The Blyth Festival Singers are
fortunate to have the fourth soloist
as a choir member. John De Jager
of Goderich will sing the tenor solo
selections from the Messiah. Mr.
DeJager received his vocal training
from Earl Clark of Stratford. He
has sung arias from the Messiah
with Orchestra London when it
performed in Goderich and with the
Blyth Festival Singers when they
performed Messiah Part One in
1991. He is well known in the area
for his excellence in singing and his
sensitive interpretation of the
music.
First Presbyterian's pipe organ
will lead the accompaniment under
the skilled hands of organist Carol
Carter. Violinist Anne-Marie
McQuaid-Snider, trumpeter Dave
Manning and tympanist Chris
Adair will also provide
accompaniment for the Singers.
A native of Seaforth, Anne-Marie
McQuaid-Snider and her sisters
were well-known and popular
violinists. She took her early
training in St. Marys, later
graduating in music performance
from Wilfred Laurier University
where she was concertmaster of the
orchestra. She is currently living in
Kitchener and performs with the
K-W Symphony Orchestra.
Trumpeter Dave Manning lives
in Stratford where he is head of the
music department at a Stratford
secondary school and conductor of
the Stratford Concert Band. He
studied with the principal trumpet
player of the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra.
Chris Adair is a lifetime resident
of Stratford where he has been
involved with the Stratford Concert
Band for 20 years. He also plays
with various weekend combos and
big bands.
Advance tickets ($10) are
available from the Blyth Festival
