at conference
Sandra Giesbrecht of Brussels
has recently returned from a world-
wide gathering of reflexologists in
Melbourne, Australia.
The annual conference is held by
the International Council of Reflex-
ologists (ICR) which also acts as a
global information and resource
centre.
Ms Giesbrecht says, "The confer-
ence gave me the opportunity to
meet my fellow practitioners from
all over the world. The rich
exchange of ideas and techniques
was exciting and stimulating."
Reflexology is a way of reducing
stress and helping people feel better
by using touch, usually on the pres-
sure points on the feet, she says.
Ms Geisbrecht has been practic-
ing reflexology for four years in
Listowel and is a charter member
of ICR and the Reflexology Asso-
ciation of Canada.
OPP officer pleads guilty to drinking and driving
By Mona Irwin
Signal-Star Staff
An Aurora OPP officer who
pleaded guilty Monday to driving
with a blood alcohol level above
the legal limit was fined $2,000 and
prohibited from driving for one
year.
"You of all people should have
known better than to find yourself
in a situation such as this," said Mr.
Justice Chester Miseneer, of
London, when Gaynor declined to
speak to the court just before
sentencing. "I would've thought
you would have said something
because, quite frankly, you're
privileged to be a police officer."
Former Goderich resident Randy
Gaynor, 27, was charged after a
single-vehicle accident that
occurred in East Wawanosh Twp.
in March 1992. Both Gaynor and
his passenger, Douglas Stevenson,
were injured in the crash. The two
had come from a party in the Blyth
area.
A blood sample was taken from
Gaynor in the hospital, and his
blood alcohol level was found to be
nearly 250 mg of alcohol in 100 ml
of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg
of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
According to Huron County
Crown Attorney Bob Morris,
Gaynor had gone to the party after
a hockey tournament, left once and
then returned and stayed to the end.
He was driving along County Road
25 when his vehicle struck a bridge
near Westfield Road. There were
no signs of braking or evasive
action, Morris said.
Stevenson was "seriously"
injured, Morris added, with injury
to his heart, his right ribs crushed
and his left leg broken. He has fully
recovered from his injuries.
Defence lawyer Michael Epstein,
,of London, attributed the accident
primarily to lack of sleep, saying
Gaynor had worked a full night
shift in Aurora before setting out
"early in the morning" to come to
Blyth.
"As far as we can ascertain, the
accident, in all likelihood, was
caused by his falling asleep at the
wheel," Epstein said.
Gaynor has worked as a
constable with the OPP for four
years, serving originally in Wawa,
and for the past two and a half
years with Aurora.
"He has distinguished himself in
all respects concerning his police
career," said Epstein.
Gaynor's plea and the sentence
were recommended in a joint
submission by both Morris and
Epstein.
Epstein said the decision to make
the joint submission came about
because of "significant" legal issues
in the case, particularly in
connection with Gaynor's rights
under the Charter of Rights and
Freedoms, adding he did not want
the public to believe Gaynor was
getting "special treatment" because
he is a police officer.
"(A trial) might have gone either
way," Epstein said. "We felt the
interests of justice were served by
(Gaynor's) guilty plea" driving over
80.
"It's a decision that wasn't taken
lightly by either side," Epstein
added.
Gaynor is also facing charges
under the Police Services Act. No
date has been set yet for the PSA
hearing.
