An eye on the job
Goalie Jeff McGavin seems to have the situation in hand, or more closely under foot in this
action on Friday night. Jeff was playing for the Brussels Bulls executive who took on the
CKNX Tryhards for a fundraiser. Though the final tally isn't in it is estimated that the event
raised close to $300 for the new ice resurfacing machine.

After beating the Hanover
Barons in their two previous
meetings, it was almost too much
to ask for three straight.
Sunday afternoon the Barons
dumped the Brussels Bulls 7 - 1.
The Bulls fell behind early and had
trouble generating any offence With
several key players out of the
lineup.
The Bulls were without Captain
Greg McNevan due to illness, Pete
Mulder and Mike Hurst who was
suspended, and Zack Smith due to
a bad shoulder. Winger Peter Ryter
also came up lame with a bad
charlie horse early in the contest.
Jeremy Beirnes scored the lone
goal for Brussels. Chad Diehl had
a pair for Hanover.
The Bulls' next action is Friday
night when they travel to Wingham
to play the first place Ironmen.
Sunday, the Bulls host Mt. Forest
who are currently in second spot.
Game time is 2:00.
While the final numbers are not
in yet, the Brussels Bulls executive
hopes to donate close to $300 to the
fundraising drive for the new
Olympia ice resurfacing machine.
The money was raised Friday night
in a charity game featuring the
CKNX Radio Try-hards. At a
meet-the-players dance following
the game, the winning ticket for the
Bulls car draw was pulled. Murray

The Brussels Novice Rep team
has started its 1993/94 season with
a pair of wins.
The team travelled to Zurich on
Friday, Nov. 5 for a 6:45 game. It
was a slow start for the Brussels
team which was down 2-0 until the
fmal 33 seconds of the first period
when Mark Hunter put Brussels on
the scoreboard with an assist to Lee
Dilworth.
Hunter again found the mark,
with assist to Geoffrey Banks, to tie
the game at two each in the early
moments of the second period but
Zurich came back and scored to go
ahead again 3-2 at the end of the
second period.
Brussels really started to blend as
a team in the third period and held
Zurich back while surging ahead to
score twice. Dilworth and Darrell
McClure each found the net to give
Brussels the 4-3 win.
On Saturday, Nov. 6 Brussels
travelled to Stephen Twp. to play at
noon. The Brussels squad scored
early in the first period on a goal by
Nolan Krotz with assists going to
Dilworth and Darryl Houston.
Stephen Twp. replied,with a goal
only moments later to tie the game
at one apiece.
The only goal scored in the
second period was by Stephen
Twp. to go ahead.
Brussels owned the third period,
however, keeping Stephen off the
scoreboard while scoring three
times to take control of the game.
Krotz scored twice-and Tyler
Campbell once to end the game on
a strong_note.
Good goal tending by Scott
McDonald kept Brussels in both
games. A strong defensive effort
by defensemen Houston, Matt
Clarkson, Joel Hemingway and
Ken McCallum balanced the
constant pressure of the forward
lines of Hunter, Campbell, Banks,
Krotz, Dilworth and McClure.
The Novice team is being
coached by Rick McDonald and
Murray Houston and assistants Ron
Clarkson and Allan Krotz.
The next game is Friday, Nov. 12
at 6:30 against Blyth.
Crusaders

The Brussels Crusaders won and
lost on the weekend and now hold a

81s. Corey McKee, Dave McKee,
Dean Wheeler and Tim Fritz added
singles while Brad Carter assisted
on four scores. Solid defence and
Trev Fortune's goaltending saved
the game late as Palmerston held a
two man advantage for the final 30
seconds.
The Crusaders four game
winning streak came to an end
Sunday night as the Tavistock
Royals scored four unanswered
third period goals en route to a 9-3
win.

scored for Brussels, who fell into
second place with the loss, behind
the Elora Rocks.
Friday night Brussels travels to

Winterhawks are in town Sunday
night at 7:30. Penalties kill momentum
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets' exhibition
season concluded on Nov. 1 as they
travelled to Ripley for a rematch.
Blyth could do very little right as
Ripley made the game look easy in
beating Blyth 5-1. After watching
Ripley build a 4-0 lead Blyth
finally got on the scoreboard in the
dying seconds of the second period.
Brian McNichol and Casey Boven
assisted on the shorthanded tally as
Ryan Chamney one-timed a low
drive past a sprawled Ripley crease
keeper. Ripley added an early third
period power play goal and easily
glided to a 5-1 victory.
Blyth opened their league
schedule in Brussels on Nov. 3 and
watched an early 2-0 first period
lead evaporate as Brussels
rebounded to shade the visitors 4-3.
Peter Craig set up Brian
McNichol for the game opening
goal one and a half minutes into the
gene. Four minutes later
McNichol assisted on Ryan
Chamney's goal from close range
for a 2-0 lead. Brussels got one
back later in the first and then they
notched the score at 2-2 with a goal
two minutes into the second period.
McNichol picked up his third
point of the game midway through
the second as linemates Tim Lyons
and Casey Boven assisted on his go
a head goal. Penalties killed
Blyth's momentum later in the
period as Brussels completed the
game scoring with two power play
markers. The teams played a
scoreless third frame and Brussels
hung on for a well deserved 4-3
win.
Blyth finally recorded a W as
they hosted Exeter II on Nov. 5 and
survived some inconsistent
goaltending in winning 6-4. Henry
Bos and Boven assisted on the
opening goal as Lyons tipped home
Boven's corner pass-out for his first
goal of the season. Ben Hakkers'
backhanded goal number two into
the twine as Chamney picked up
Wilfred Datema's shot off the end
boards and fed Hakkers to the right
of the goal.
Exeter II cut the lead to 2-1 late
in the first but Blyth put the game
out of reach in the second period.
Chamney upped the lead to 3-1 one
minute into the second thanks to
some fine passing from linemates
Christopher Howson and Hakkers.
Chamney upped the count to 4-1 on
a power play midway through the
period. He took a clearing pass
from defenceman Tim Cowan,
deked through all the Exeter II
defenders before slipping the puck
past a sprawled and helpless
opposition cage keeper.
Less than a minute later Blyth
had a 5-1 lead as Hakkers' centring
pass was tipped by Jason Heipel to
Howson in the slot. Howson made
it look easy with a quick one-timer
into the top corner.
Exeter II got back into the game
with two quick goals but Hakker,
assisted by Chamney and Howson,
notched his second goal of the
game for a 6-3 lead. Exeter II
scored a late third period goal but
Blyth wasn't really threatened as
they recorded their first win of the
season by a 6-4 count.
Action continues this week as
they travel to Hensall on Nov. 10
and then host Listowel 11 on Friday,
Nov. 12.
Blyth Bantams

The Blyth Bantams have opened
their season in a winning way, with
a hard fought 4-4 tie against
Clinton. The next game had them
travelling to Huron Park and the
Blyth boys were victorious by a 9
to 6 score.
Blyth opened their home
schedule with an 8 to 2 victory over
Elma Logan. Blyth played
strongly, building up an early lead
which they held for the win in a
game which turned very chippy in
the late going. Goal scorers for
Blyth were Chad Haggitt, two,
Mark Wilson, Jason Rutledge,
Robbie Johnston, Brian Marks, Ben
Craig, and Brad Anderson one
each. Assists went to Brad
Anderson, four, Mark Wilson,

each.
Blyth travelled to Brussels and
combined strong skating and pin
point passing to record an 11 to 1
victory. Blyth goal scorers were
Chris Stewart, five, Brian Marks,
two, Chad Haggitt, Brad Anderson,
Mark Wilson and Nathan Loder.
Assists went to Mark Wilson, three,
