A sweet spot

Mark Howard of Brussels lef
Oct. 16 for a trip to his old stompin
grounds. Mark arrived in St. John's
Newfoundland at 10:30 a.m. Oct.
16 where he was met by his brother
Cyril and sister-in-law Irene. He
stayed with them until Tuesday,
Oct. 19.
Tuesday morning was raining
and blowing very hard. Cyril drove
Mark to their birth place, Daniel's
Cove, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland.
Mark stayed at the homestead. The
house was built by Mark's father in
1908. Nine children were born in
that house. Another was born in
the hospital. Mark stayed until Oct.
29 when he returned to St. John's
for his flight home to Brussels on
Oct. 30. While in Daniels' Cove,
Mark said he drank too much

The Brussels Legion will hold a
Remembrance Day Service at the
Cenotaph on Thursday, Nov. 11 at
10:30 a.m. A church service will
follow at Duffs United Church in
Walton at 11:30 a.m. The
Remembrance Day Banquet will be
at the Branch at 7 p.m. Social time
is 6 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 per
person and available at the Canteen
or Murray's Barber Shop.
The Brussels Legion sent two

The primary drama presentation,
The Velveteen Rabbit, was held on
Nov. 2, at Brussels Public School.
Primary students from East
Wawanosh, Grey Central and
Walton came to see this
presentation at the school.
Crystal McLellan thought it was
cool. Brooklyn Wheeler's response
was, "It was good''. Kyle
Stephenson acted in it as the boy in
the play. Brittany Kellington
thought it was excellent! Ben
Leger liked the part when they
were in the cars.
At 9:30 a.m. students are holding
a Remembrance Day assembly on
Thursday, Nov. 11. Everyone is
welcome to come hear the band
play. As well, there will be a
number of Remembrance Day
readings.
Last Thursday evening Mrs.
Hall's kindergarten class, appeared
teams to compete in the Zone
Cribbage Tournament held in
Howick Branch on Oct. 30.
Twenty-four tables played for the
qualifying eight positions for the
District level. The Brussels ladies'
team of Sandra Josling, Colleen
Martin, Kathy Haycock and Margo
Richardson had the Branch's best
placing, missing the qualifying
round by only one game. The other
Branch team of Eric Ross, Bob
Richardson, John Harrison and
Julie Harrison didn't have lady luck
on channel eight news with a
message of being careful on
Halloween. We hope everyone was
careful and had a safe and
enjoyable time.
Last week the primary students
sculpted witches. They would like
to thank the volunteers who helped
with the crafts. They turned out
very well.
Also thanks to the CIBC, for
letting them display their art work.
Some teachers said that the art was
well done!
On Nov. 4 teachers and students
at Brussels Public School received
tetanus and diphtheria needles.
Soccer playoffs were this week.
In the boys division red won, in the
girls division the green won. Good
Work!!

The results of the mixed darts
held on Tuesday, Nov. 2 are as
follows: Gord Jacklin and Lynda
Shaw, first and Carol Thornton and
Bill Nethery, second. High
shooters were Barb DesJardins (98)
and Gord Jacklin (107). Darts are
held every Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
The branch will hold its general
meeting on Monday, Nov. 15 at 8
p.m. All voting members are urged
to attend.
The next euchre night is
Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 7:45 p.m.
Cost is $1.50 per person.
The next pub night at the branch
is Friday, Nov. 19 at 9 p.m.

On Nov. 2, eight tables were
filled to play euchre sponsored by
Majestic WI.
Prizes went to: high lady, June
Jacklin; high man, Yvonne Knight;
low lady, Clara Haig; low man,
Mrs. Pollerd; lucky tallies, Mel
Jacklin, William Craig, Jean Fraser,
Freda Darcy, Ross Stevenson,
Stewart Musgrove and Jane
DeVries.

A "turr" is a commercial bird
which is sold to a factory and
"shipped to Europe. These birds
have a black top and white bottom.
The season for them is October to
February. If you have a good fast
boat and are a good shooter you
can have a healthy income, weather
permitting. These are sea birds.
There must be two men in a boat,
an operator and gunner.
Next came moose hunting.
Jimmy Barret, Fraser Tuttle, Robert
Barrett and Boyd Button had
licenses and Mark went as a cook.
Their camp is halfway between
Carbonear and Heart's Content,
called Angler's Rest.
The quota, four, was filled by
noon.
Ten cm. of mow fell. They were
at camp 36 hours.
Mark returned to Brussels
Monday, Nov. 1.
