Brussels Livestock report Cows selling up $1, from $90 to high of $99.35 Sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending Oct. 29 were: fed cattle, 962; cows, 267; veal calves, 160; sheep and goats, 119; stockers, 2,367; and pigs, light run. The market at Brussels Livestock saw fed cattle selling .50 to $1 higher. Cows sold $1 higher. There were 686 steers on offer selling from $90 to $95 to the high of $101.75. Sixteen steers consigned by Jim Howatt, Londesborough, averaging 1329 lbs. sold for an average of $97.30 with sales to $100.75. Thirty-four steers consigned by Cunningham Farms, Lucan, averaging 1355 lbs. sold for an average of $92.64 with sales to $100.25. Nine steers By John Bancroft Farm Management Specialist for Huron County To help beef producers develop replacement heifers, the Huron County Replacement Heifer Development Project has been set up. Weaned, vaccinated heifers are to be delivered Dec. 14 to the farm of Hank Van Dorp at RR 3, Auburn. The heifers will grow on a nutritionally balanced ration with a target of 1.75 pounds per day. Any beef breed or cross heifer born in April and May will be considered. Heifers have to be weaned and introduced to dry feed by Nov. 14. By Nov. 21, they have to be vaccinated for IBR-P13, BVD and seven or eight way clostridia'. They have to be treated for warbles, lice, wormed and be dehorned and healed. The minimum delivery weight is 450 pounds. Upon delivery on Dec. 14, the ATTEMPTED BREAK ENTER AND THEFTS There were two attempted break and enters in Vanastra, one at the Tuckersmith Twp. Curling Club and the other at the Vanastra Recreation Centre. In both cases entry was made but the thieves failed to steal anything. Goderich OPP are looking for clues in this case. DAMAGE TO SIGNS It was noticed on Oct. 11 that Reform Party signs were damaged at the airport road in Colborne Twp.; unknown persons painted swastikas on them. Goderich OPP are seeking help in solving this matter. DAMAGE COMPLAINT Over the weekend of Oct. 16/17 persons unknown stole two stop signs, one from the corner of Russel and Wellington Street and the other from Russel Street at London Road in Port Albert. They then knocked down six other signs. This type of offence could result in serious injury should someone fail to stop and cause an accident. On Jan. 13, the heifers will start a 112 day feeding period during which time they will be weighed every 28 days and chute scored for temperament and soundness. Following the end of the test in May, the heifers will go to the pasture. Heifers will undergo a synchronization program using the MGA Recipe and be bred artificially starting the week of July 4. The particular Al sire will be selected by the consignor of the heifer. Consignors will be responsible for the health costs during the first month, the cost of the semen and the insurance on their animals. The fee for the feeding period from Dec. 14, to July 15, will be $400 Crime Stoppers Thieves hit the region BREAK ENTER AND THEFT A residence at 17 St. Charles Place, Vanastra was broken into between 2:30 and 8 a.m. on Oct. 22. Thieves stole a grey, Zenith VCR. THEFT OF GENERATOR On Oct. 11 at Lot 32, Conc. 11, Ashfield Twp., a thief stole a Honda generator, flood light and wire from a cottage. THEFT OF LICENCE PLATE A vehicle parked in Port Albert had its licence plate No. MEN434 stolen overnight Oct. 15/16, 1993. BREAK AND ENTER There was a break-in at Mikes Stop and Go Variety store in Hensall. A window was smashed during the early hours of the morning of Aug. 26 to gain entry and once inside the thieves stole approximately $2,500 worth of cigarettes. A cheque for $200 per heifer along with pedigree information should be sent to Mr. Van Dorp. The objective is to develop productive heifers that calve at two years of age. Research in Oklahoma has shown that an extra 330 pounds of calf on a lifetime basis from heifers calving as two year olds versus three year olds can be obtained. Besides individual information, comparisons can be made among the group.
