"We could never accomplish this goal without the co-operation, assistance, and support of individuals and groups such as these. The MVCA appreciates their fine work." In presenting the Conservation Award of Distinction to the Maitland Valley Anglers Association, Mr. Wicke said that the enthusiastic efforts of the Association have improved the fisheries of the Maitland and Nine Mile Rivers. "The Association's 150 members have volunteered thousands of hours of labour to raise and stock rainbow trout and to complete a variety of stream rehabilitation projects,: said Suggitt The Association began rearing and stocking rainbow trout in 1985. The members collect about 150,000 eggs each year at the Port Albert Fishway. The fry are raised until they reach stocking size. The young fish are then released in the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds in June and early July. Since 1985, over one million fish have been stocked to supplement the naturally reproduced fish. The Association enhanced several kilometres of coldwater stream in the Blyth Brook, the Belgrave Creek, and the thinking Drain between 1988 and 1992. Rock placed in the stream improved cover for rainbow trout. To keep livestock out of the watercourse, fencing was completed. In 1993, the group began working on a major project to rehabilitate further sections of the Blyth Brook. The work of the Association has been undertaken together with the Ministry of Natural Resources' Community Fisheries Involvement Program and the MVCA's Erosion Control Assistance Service.
