get MVCA award
The Council of Colborne
Township held its bi monthly
meeting on Oct. 19 at the Colborne
Township Community Hall.
Council was advised that the
zoning by-law amendment for Ken
Brindley, Part Lot 12, Lake Road
West Concession to permit the
operation of a Farmers' Flea Market
was now in full force as the 20 day
appeal period had expired with no
objections being filed.
The Committee of Adjustment
granted a minor variance for
Rinaldo Facchinato, Part Lot 28,
Plan 180 to recognize an under-
sized lot and to permit an increased
lot coverage. There is a 30 day
appeal period from the date of
granting the variance.
Council authorized that Hallo-
ween within the Township would
be observed on Saturday, Oct. 30.
Council granted permission to
the Colborne Snowmobile Club to
use township property located at
Part Lots 13 and 14, Concession 3,
E.D. for the purposes of a
snowmobile trail on the
understanding that the township
shall not assume any responsibility
for personal or property damage.
Council was advised that the
cleanout of the open ditch portion
of the Allin-Young Municipal
Drain has been completed. The
Ministry of Natural Resources must
complete their inspection.
Permission was granted by
council to the residents of Ridge-
wood Park to plant a tree on
township property.
Council authorized Clerk Stewart
to attend the Huron County
Municipal Officer's Association,
Clerks and Treasurers Section Fall
meeting, Nov. 29 in Goderich.
There is no registration fee.
The final installment for 1993
taxes is due Oct. 29.
At the Oct. 5 meeting council
authorized the payment of the bills
and accounts in the total amount of
$375,124.83. Included in this
amount were the quarterly
entitlements to the Huron County
Board of Education - $224,290.05;
Hullett Twp. residents will be
seeing a change along the road-
sides.
Council approved the purchase of
five dozen trees for roadside plant-
ing, at the Oct. 5 meeting.
Two tile drainage loan applica-
tions were accepted, subject to
availability of funds and township
bylaws.
Lot 32 East, Pt Lot 33, Conc. 12
will receive a loan in the amount of
$6,900 and the loan for Lot 32,
the Huron Perth Roman Catholic
Separate School Board -
$22,290.79; the County of Huron -
$80,777.70.
The next regularly scheduled
meeting of Council is Tuesday,
Nov. 2 at 8 p.m. in the Council
Chambers at the Colborne
Community Hall.
Conc. 12 will be $3,900.
Council decided an estimated
amount of $15,500 will be spent on
the maintenance of the Murray-
Lamb drainage works.
A bylaw to rezone Part Lot 5,
Conc. 3 from institutional to agri-
cultural small holding was
approved by council.
General accounts of $362,099.87
and road accounts of $22,103.69
for the month of September were
approved and paid by council.
The conservation efforts of a
community group and six
individuals were recognized at the
general meeting of the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority
(MVCA) held in Wroxeter on Oct.
20.
The MVCA's Conservation
Award of Distinction was presented
to the Maitland Valley Anglers
Association. Conservation Award
Certificates were presented to Wib
Hartin, of Goderich, Kevin and
Abner Martin, of Elma Township,
Hilbert Van Ankum, of Howick
Township and John Fitzgibbon and
Les Thomas of the University of
Guelph. -
"The goal of the MVCA is to
conserve watershed soil and water
resources," noted Authority Chair
George Wicke. "We could never
accomplish this goal without the
co-operation, assistance, and
support of individuals and groups
such as these. The MVCA
appreciates their fine work."
In presenting the Conservation
Award of Distinction to the
Maitland Valley Anglers
Association, Mr. Wicke said that
the enthusiastic efforts of the
Association have improved the
fisheries of the Maitland and Nine
Mile Rivers. "The Association's
150 members have volunteered
thousands of hours of labour to
raise and stock rainbow trout and to
complete a variety of stream
rehabilitation projects,: said Suggitt
The Association began rearing
and stocking rainbow trout in 1985.
The members collect about 150,000
eggs each year at the Port Albert
Fishway. At a hatchery operated
by the group, the eggs are cared for

until the fry emerge. The fry are
raised until they reach stocking
size. The young fish are then
released in the Maitland and Nine
Mile River watersheds in June and
early July. Since 1985, over one
million fish have been stocked to
supplement the naturally
reproduced fish.
The Association enhanced
several kilometres of coldwater
stream in the Blyth Brook, the
Belgrave Creek, and the thinking
Drain between 1988 and 1992.
Rock placed in the stream
improved cover for rainbow trout.
To keep livestock out of the
watercourse, fencing was
completed. In 1993, the group
began working on a major project
to rehabilitate further sections of
the Blyth Brook.
The work of the Association has
been undertaken together with the
Ministry of Natural Resources'
Community Fisheries Involvement
Program and the MVCA's Erosion
Control Assistance Service.
