Christmas is months away,
however there are volunteers deep
into the throws of planning
Christmas cheer for an anticipated
1,050 needy children in Huron
County.
Thirty-five years ago the Huron
County Christmas Bureau was
formed by a group of caring
volunteers who were concerned
about needy children in the county:
They started by hand knitting warm
mittens, sewing pajamas and
organizing Christmas goodies for
children who otherwise would have
no gifts under their Christmas tree.
These volunteers represented many
community groups which had
independently provided for families
at Christmas.
The decision was made to have
the Children's Aid Society of
Huron County, a child focused
agency, to co-ordinate all efforts.
Working together and pooling
resources they strove to ensure that
no child was missed.
This tradition continues today.
The Christmas Bureau cares for
families with children from all over
Huron County. Families needing
assistance are referred by churches,
friends, social welfare agencies,
and in some cases, by themselves.
Volunteers working out of the
Children's Aid Society's office,
arrange for families to attend their
local bureau to select gifts for their
children and to receive a portion of
the donated food. Each family is
also given a food gift certificate
from their local grocery store with
which to purchase Christmas
dinner. Each child receives major
gifts of a toy and an article of
clothing and warm mittens. This
tradition of giving hand knit
mittens is carried out through the
generosity of skilled neighbours
and friends of the Bureau.
The present day Christmas
Bureau is run locally by churches
in Clinton, Goderich, Seaforth,
Egmondville, Exeter and Wing-
ham. This year donations will be
received during the week of Dec.
13 to 17 with distribution to
families made the following week.
Organizations, be it businesses,
service clubs or a group of
neighbours, could plan a donation
drive. Collect new toys and/or
clothing at one of the meetings.
Raise money to donate to the local
bureau, which will provide
Christmas dinners or be used to
purchase gifts not donated by the
public.
The Huron County Christmas
Bureau has been caring for the
children Of the county for many
years. The need will be greater in
1993 than in previous years. Each
and every resident of Huron
County is being asked to help
provide for the children at this very
special time of year.
If you wish additional
information or a speaker to address
your group or if you need help this
Christmas please contact the Huron
County Christmas Bureau care of
the Children's Aid Society of
Huron County at 524-7356 or 1-
800-265-5198.
Working together we will build a
brighter future and a merrier
Christmas for the children.
