The Farm Registration and Farm
Organizations Funding Act has
passed third reading OCt. 7 and is
now awaiting royal assent.
"This legislation represents an
important tool for the advancement
of Ontario's farm community as a
strong, sustainable and yet
diversified group," said Ontario
Minister of Agriculture and Food
Elmer Buchanan.
"General farm organizations, on
behalf of the whole farm
community, will be able to increase
their education and research efforts
and continue to provide policy and
program advice to government."
Under the Act, all Ontario farm
businesses with gross income of
$7,000 or more are required to
register with the Ministry of
Agriculture and Food and provide
an annual $150 fee that the
Ministry will forward to the
accredited general farm
organization selected by the
registrant. Accredited organizations
initially recognized by the
legislation are: the Christian
Farmers' Federation of Ontario
(CFFO), and the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture (OFA).
Other general farm organizations
may apply for accreditation under
the Act. The Union des cultivateurs
franco-ontariens will be named as
the eligible francophone organiza-
tion to receive special funding for
the first three years.

nesses have the option of request-
ing a full refund of the fee from the
appropriate farm organization. The
Farm Organizations Accreditation
Tribunal will also determine
requests for exemption from
individuals who object on religious
grounds to providing a cheque to an
accredited organization and/or
registering their farm operation
with the Ministry.
The first group of farm
businesses will receive their
registration forms and explanatory
brochures in December. The
registration system will be phased
in over the winter months and
should be completed by April
1994.
At that time, access to selected
Ministry programs, such as the
1994 Farm Tax Rebate Program,
will depend on having obtained and
maintained a valid farm business
registration number for eligible
farm businesses.
Detailed regulations are being
developed and will be reviewed by
Cabinet over the next few weeks to
support this new law.

Hats-for-Hides
Green's Meat Market in Wing-
ham will be taking part in a pilot
project initiated by the Union of
Ontario Indians and the Ministry of
Natural Resources.
This fall, hide collectors will be
handing out orange-blaze hats fea-
turing silk-screened logos when
they receive hides from hunters.
The logos will honour the deer,
moose and bear in the three year
series.
The artwork is that of Nipissing
First Nation artist Perry McLeod-
Shabogesic.
He says, "The hats are designed
to have a contemporary look that
will appeal to hunters who collect
hats yearly,"
