'Po ports Crusaders tie in exhibition The Brussels Crusaders prepared for their home opener this Friday night by skating to a 5-5 exhibition tie against the Drayton Comets Sunday afternoon in Drayton. Dean Wheeler led the attack with a two goal, two assist effort while J.C. Hewitt, Ron Strome and Corey McKee added singles. McKee's goal was scored with the Crusader goalie on the bench for the extra attacker at 18:43 of the final period. Drayton returns to Brussels Friday night as the Crusaders attempt to revive Senior Hockey in Brussels. Game time is 8:30 with a "Meet the Crusaders" after the game in the blueline club. Crusaders signees to date include the goaltending dual of Trevor Fortune and Derek Cooper while the defence is anchored by Bevin Flett, Gord Hutchison, J.C. Hewitt, Dean Nicholson, and Corey McKee. Ron Strome, Dean Wheeler, Steve Fritz, Brad Carter, and Darren Akey have signed up front with commitments from McKee's two brothers Jeff and Dave. Local skaters Dan and Brad Beuerman, Brian McArter and Greg Mulvey are challenging for spots while Ted Sills, Rich Bowman and Jeff Roy remain possibilities. Tim Fritz and Brian Campbell remain undecided about their playing whereabouts. Pete Exel returns as trainer while Hugh Nichol holds the Manager/Coach titles. On top of things Brussels Bulls were all over the Walkerton Blackhawks end on Saturday night in the home opener, but the opponent's goalie Jon Biesenthal was on top of his game allowing his team to win. The Bulls host first place Wingham Ironmen on Saturday night. Brussels Bulls upset Hanover The Brussels Bulls beat the Hanover Barons Sunday 4 - 1 to salvage what would have been a very long weekend for the Western Junior C team. The young Bulls went in to Hanover with a record of 0 and 3, but put together three solid periods of hockey, including some excellent netminding by 16-year- old Scott Walls, to come up with the team's first victory of the season. The Bulls and Barons traded first period goals with defenceman Tim Beyer doing the damage for Brussels as he ripped a slapshot underneath the crossbar behind Barons' netminder Derek Adams. In the second, the Hanover netminder bobbled a Nate Bender slapshot and Winger Pete Mulder pounced on the rebound and tucked it into the open cage. Bender followed that up with the Bulls' third goal of the game just two minutes later. The Bulls dominated the third period with some tight checking. The fourth goal came when rookie Darin Alviano took a nice pass from Captain Greg McNevan and went in all alone and slide a shot through the pads of Barons' goalie Don Spittal who had come on in relief of Adams. The Jr. C Bulls found out how balanced the league is this year dropping 7-4 decisions to both Mt. Forest and Walkerton. Friday night, Greg McNevan scored twice while Jason Baier and Jeremy Beirnes added singles against the Patriots. In the Bulls home opener Saturday evening, Brussels outplayed the Blackhawks but Walkerton goalie Jon Biesenthal stood on his head. Once again, McNevan led the attack with two goals and an assist. Pete Mulder and Beirnes rounded out the scoring. Brussels pulled the goalie trailing 5 - 3 and did manage one goal but then gave up two empty netters. The Bulls next action is Saturday night when they host the first place Wingham Ironmen. Game time is 9:00. Sunday, the Bulls travel to Walkerton for a rematch with the Hawks.
