THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1993. PAGE 19. Blue Box program diverts 2 million tons Ontario's blue box recycling system has reached a total diversion of two million tons of resource materials from landfill since it started in 1986, according to OMMRI: Corporations in Support of Recycling Calculations. The milestone comes as Ontario celebrates Waste Reduction Week Oct. 4 to 10. Five hundred and thirteen On Wednesday, Sept. 22, police officers from the Mount Forest detachment of the OPP attended a farm in West Garafraxa Township (near Arthur). While executing a warrant to search for alleged stolen property and narcotics, the officers discovered what appears to be a dogfighting operation. Officers with the Ontario S.P.C.A. and the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society were asked to assist in the investigation. Numerous items associated with dogfighting including training equipment and dogfighting pits were found on the property. Found near one of the pits was the mauled body of a small Beagle-type dog that may have been used to train the Pit Bull dogs for fighting. A number of dogs had recent injuries consistent with dogfighting and required veterinary attention. Scars were visible on most of the adult Dogs. Under the authority of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 18 dogs, 9 of whom are puppies, were removed and taken to several animal shelters for care and treatment. The Ontario SPCA is concerned with all forms of animal abuse and neglect. However, animal cruelty which involves premeditated thought to cause animal suffering (i.e. dogfighting) is of particular concern to our Society. This type of activity has a desensitizing effect on people. Studies have shown that people who are cruel to animals are more likely to be involved in violent crimes against people. The correlation between cruelty to animals and violence against humans is well documented and municipalities throughout Ontario have blue box recycling systems involving 3.1 million households and reaching 80 per cent of the population. "Ontario is the only jurisdiction in the world that has achieved this level of recycling. Not only is it available to so many people, but numerous studies show more than 90 per cent of the people who have includes such notable criminals as: Albert De Salvo (the self-confessed "Boston Strangler"), David By Brian Hall Farm Management Specialist for Huron County. The Huron Soil and Crop Improvement Association is pleased to announce a new award to recognize farmers who demonstrate good stewardship practices. The award, to be called the "Good Steward Award", is to recognize Huron County farmers for their strong commitment in their roles as stewards of the land. Some of the ways a farmer manages his entire farm operation to protect the environment and conserve natural resources on the farm that will be considered are soil and water conservation practices, manure storage and handling, efficient use of crop inputs such as the use of soil testing and feed testing and the safe handling and storage of hazardous material such as fuel, fertilizer or pesticides. No single farm practice alone would provide the basis for receiving the award, but a whole farm approach will be considered. The association would like to stress that the award is not a competition between farmers, but rather a recognition of the stewardship efforts of fanners, and thus more than one award may be presented each year. blue boxes regularly use them. Ontarians are really committed to it. The people who recycle and the municipalities who offer these programs are to be congratulated," said OMMRI President Bob Flemington. OMMRI is an industry organiza- tion that helps set up and expand municipal blue box programs by providing capital assistance. Environment concerns Ontario WI Drew Blackwell, executive co- ordinator — Ontario Round Table on Environment and Economy was the luncheon speaker at the August board meeting of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario. Mr. Blackwell urged the membership to support local committees for sustainable development, as it relates to their environmental theme of the 90s. Glenna Smith, provincial program co-ordinator for the organization spoke on her recent involvement with the "Green Wave of Recycling". She reminded members of the benefits of composting and asked them to take an active role in their communities, by setting an example. membership includes companies in the fields of newspaper printing and publishing, all types of packaging, soft drink manufacturing and bottling, and grocery products manufacturing and distributing. OMMRI keeps statistical records relating to municipal recycling in Ontario. The resource materials that can be collected in blue boxes have expanded well beyond the standard newspapers, steel and aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars and PET plastic soft drink containers. More than half of the municipal recycling programs also collect corrugated cardboard, rigid plastic containers, magazines and telephone books. In addition, a growing number collect boxboard, aluminum foil, plastic film, gable top and aseptic packaging, household paper, foam trays and cups, and textiles.
