Local artists in exhibition Night of music and laughs It was a special evening of entertainment in Blyth Friday night when Canadian talent Don Harron and his wife singer Catherine McKinnon performed in a fundraising event for the theatre. The night raised about $5,000 for Blyth Festival. Entertainment Charlie for PM By Bonnie Gropp After listening to Charlie Far- quharson at Blyth Festival on Fri- day evening, the idea of him running for Prime Minister doesn't seem as ludicrous as one might think. Under the colours of the ReFarm Party banner, Mr. Farquharson, aka notable Canadian talent Don Har- ron, delivered if not some of the most likely solutions, definitely the most unique, which Canadians may be ready to consider. For example to help the deficit he's going to close down the postal service and send the mail with Jehovah's Wit- ness. "They're going door-to-door anyway." At least he made it easy to laugh at this mess anyway. Mr. Harron and his wife, singer Catherine McKinnon entertained a full house with almost three hours of music and comedy. While Ms McKinnon filled the hall with the vibrancy of her dark, rich voice, Mr. Harron filled it with laughter. Thinking of him as Charlie, peo- ple may not always remember that Mr. Harron is a class act. His humour is intelligent and deals with topical issues on everything from the environment (Ruth Grier has been looking all over Ontario for a place to have a dump), to safe sex (Now that Canada is on its way to becoming a condom nation) to baseball, which he says actually originated in the Bible (In the big inning) . His first appearance on stage was without guise and in a conversa- tional approach, salted with casual humour he related personal anec- dotes about the making of his new book "Charlie's Abroad". He and Ms McKinnon have been all over the world taking shots of Charlie in various spots, which in itself paints a picture. "Imagine walking around with a guy who looks like an unmade bed," his wife says. For her part Ms McKinnon delighted the audience with old You can lose a lot more than your licence drinking and driving. oni.r. It served as a centre for community activities until 1984, when it was closed due to fire and safety concerns. According to retired MPP Jack Riddell, "The Bayfield Town Hall is the last building of its type still standing in Huron County". A commitment to save the building from destruction inspired a local committee to begin to raise the $398,000 needed to restore the historic structure. Although this event will note the official opening of the hall, exhibition co-ordinator Sylva Leser has commented that in these days of emerging cultural awareness, it is appropriate that the first event scheduled for the space will be an exhibition of some of the finest work by artists in he Huron region. Leser also promises a few surprises in the unique way the show will be displayed. The Bayfield Town Hall is located on Clan Gregor Square, just off Highway 21 in Bayfield. The public is invited to attend the opening festivities on Friday evening, or to enjoy the show Saturday and Sunday. The "Artists at Work" Studio Tour, happens two weeks later, on Oct. 16 & 17, with members of the group opening their studios to visits by art lovers and curious tourists alike. For more information, write to the Huron Society of Artists, RR 5, Seaforth, ON, NOK 1WO, or phone (519) 345-2184. The show and tour promise to be two great ways to spend an autumn weekend in Huron County. favourites, including a medley of Patsy Cline songs, which she per- formed as a young girl on Singa- long Jubilee, and of course her memorable Farewell to Nova Sco- tia. Laughter and music can often work therapeutic magic and last Friday night was a good shot in the arm for the audience and for the theatre.
