Can you imagine riding in an
armoured car surrounded by
armoured trucks every time you
went any place? Or trying to sleep
with families wailing and chanting
on the other side of the wall, or
soldiers marching around on the
roof above you?
These were some of the
experiences related by Trudy
Waldinger when she spoke to the
ladies at the Maitland Presbyterial
Fall Rally held in Knox Church,
Kincardine on Sept. 15. Ms.
Waldinger had gone to Somalia last
winter to work with UNICEF and
help to distribute nine-and-a-half
tons of clothing that had been
collected and packed in a 10-foot
case at the Kincardine church. She
was amazed how the UNICEF
workers from many different
countries were able to work
together and all understand each
other. She challenged the group by
saying they should help to make a
better life, and they couldn't claim
ignorance as an excuse as she had
told them of the situation of these
women and children. The
television and magazine pictures
were nothing compared to the real
situations, she said.
The meeting commenced at 5:30
with a delicious supper served by
the Kincardine ladies.
