June Foran participates in walk- a-dog-a-thon
A Blyth woman will be taking
)art in a very worthy event in
3oderich on Oct. 3.
June Foran and her guide dog
Bud will participate in the 9th
Annual 10 Km Walk-a Dog-a-
Thon. The event is held to raise
money for Canine Visions Canada
(CVC).
CVC is a non-profit organization
which provides, free of charge to
visually impaired and blind Canadi-
ans the opportunity of acquiring a
Rev. Jock Tolmay conducted the
service at Blyth United Church on
Sunday, Sept. 26. Phyllis Boak was
organist. Greeters were Bea
Chambers and Vera Badley. Ushers
were Tom Cronin, Bill, Brenda and
Tina Burkholder. Barb Richmond
was in charge of the nursery and
Lynn Logue was with the junior
congregation.
Rev. Tolmay opened the service
with Call to Worship followed by
the hymn "Come Let us Sing of the
Lord". Prayer of Approach and
Prayer of Confession were
repeated. Responsive reading was
Psalm 63, the tale of David when
he was in the desert. Hymn "My
Lord, Who in the Desert Fed" was
sung.
Children's time was "The rock
that rolled". A rock and a stick
were used to demonstrate the story
of the Israelites travelling from
place to place camping with no
water to drink. They started to
complain and quarrel with Moses.
The Lord told Moses to go on
ahead of the people, strike the rock
and the water would come out.
Moses did what God told him.
God promises us what we need;
he knows where we are and is
During the morning service the
Blyth Christian Reformed Church
congregation had the opportunity to
witness the infant baptism of
Austin Robert, son of Bert and
Brenda Sjaarda. Rev. Ron Luchies
of Lucknow led the service and
administered the baptism.
The sermon was called "God's
Children". The scripture readings
were taken from Genesis 17: 1-14
and Acts 2: 37-41. From these two
passages the congregation learned
that the first sign of the covenant
that was used in the Old Testament
On Saturday, Oct. 2, Sparling's
Propane will be conducting an
Emergency Response Course in co-
operation with the Blyth and
District Fire Department. This all-
day, joint exercise is intended to
provide firefighters with an
understanding of the characteristics
of propane, how storage and
handling equipment functions and
the proper procedure for emergency
situations. Extensive, hands-on
guide dog.
The program includes a 26 day
training course with room and
board, transportation to the training
facility, a trained dog guide, dog
harness, leash, collar and grooming
equipment.
The Walk in 1992 allowed 36
people to participate in the pro-
gram.
Mrs. Foran of Blyth has been
involved in the program for five
years since she was partnered with
Bud.
always watching over us.
A solo "Jesus is My Nearest
Neighbour" was sung by Adeline
Campbell. Scripture from Exodus
17; 1-17; Matthew 16, 13-20 was
followed by the hynm "Come Let
Us Sing".
The sermon theme was "God's
love, trickle or torrent". Rev.
Tolmay told of a personal
experience. He was in the army in
the desert without water and having
to make the right decision as to the
safe way to return to his camp. In a
desert, water comes from a rock
and when God stands on the rock it
makes a difference to our
possibilities, he said.
We resist and resent what is new.
Sometimes change uses a lot of
energy. If you want God to come
into your life, get into conversation
with God, listen to God and have
more communication with God,
Rev. Tolmay said. God says Come
to Me, I want you to be with me
and I will be with you wherever
you go.
Prayer of the congregation and
the Lord's Prayer were repeated in
unison. "Glorious Things of These
are Spoken" was sung.
Commissioning, Benediction and
was circumcision.
In the New Testament in Acts
circumcision was replaced with
baptism. Baptism is God's way of
welcoming people to the covenant
of his love.
Peter says in Acts 2 v. 38 that if
people are baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ then they receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit.
Next Sunday the congregation
welcome Rev. Dwayne Phielke to
the pulpit. Rev. Dwayne and
Gladys Phielke along with their
family are missionaries in the
Philippines.
exercises are scheduled throughout
the day at the Sparling's Propane
facility south of Blyth.
Clearly, history has shown that a
fire department with accurate
product knowledge and proper
training is best equipped to handle
emergencies. This is the first of
Sparling's training courses
scheduled for Blyth and the new
Flesherton facility.
She has taken part in the walk
twice, last year raising about $800.
She says she hopes the Blyth area
will help her raise over $1,000 this
year.
Mrs. Foran says, "It is very
expensive to train one dog. The
cost is about $6,000 and each coun-
ty tries to raise enough money
through the walk each year to pay
for one animal."
The event is sponsored by Lions
clubs throughout the region with
the Goderich club hosting the walk
