Doug and Marjory Fraser shook
many hands in welcoming people
to the 128th anniversary service of
Duff's United Sept. 19. With
Glenda Carter at the organ and
Patty Banks at the piano, the
service began with a sing-song,
followed by the choir's singing of
the introit, "Walk with Me".
Rev. Banks welcomed everyone
and announced that next Sunday
was the beginning of Sunday
School, Sept. 29 is the official
board meeting and Oct. 3 is World
Wide Communion.
Viola Kirkby read from the Book
of Exodus 16:2-15, the story of the
Manna and the Quail. Rev. Charlie
Swan was called upon to tell the
children's story in which he told of
three kinds of listeners. He
wondered which of the three the
children were. He pulled a funnel
from his bag and asked if they were
like the funnel — in one ear and out
the other? Then out came a sifter —
perhaps they were like the sifter, he
said, which lets the good stuff fall
through but holds the bad things.
He hoped they were like the sponge
which absorbs information and can
recall it when needed.
The choir then sang "Rejoice in
God" followed by Rev. Banks'
The Brussels Bulls picked up
their first victory of the exhibition
schedule on Sunday when they beat
the New Hamburg Spirit '83 5-3 at
the Listowel Arena. Veteran
Jonathan Lane paced the attack
with a pair of goals while Jamie
Williams, rookie Darin Alviano
and Josh Alexander added singles.
It was the Bulls' third game in
three days and gave the coaching
staff a good opportunity to get the
roster set for next month's opener.
Saturday night the Bulls took it
on the chin losing to Orangeville 7-
1. The Bulls only goal came on a
nice rush by Zack Smith, a
newcomer to the blueline.
Friday night the Bulls took on
New Hamburg in Waterloo but ran
out of gas late in the game and lost
5-4. Brussels held the lead through
much of the contest but when
several defencemen were ejected
New Hamburg was able to rally.
Greg Brown, who played with the
Listowel Midgets last season,
paced the offence with a goal and
an assist.
The Bulls have signed 16 players
including seven veterans. Back this
season, Greg McNevan, Brian
Zabel, Nate Bender, Jonathan Lane,
Jason Baier, Tim Beyer and Josh
Alexander. Unfortunately Steve
welcome to Charlie Swan. When
he left Walton in 1985, Rev. Swan
lived in Ft. Nelson, B.C. where he
experienced the mountains for the
first time and grew to love them, he
said. Since leaving Ft. Nelson he
has had the opportunity to travel
and has been to Greece, Israel
(where he experienced a great
appreciation of Scripture as he
walked in the places where Jesus
walked), Germany, London, East
Africa and Australia, where he
attended the seventh assembly.
He recalled inflicting his
homemade soup on a few people in
Walton and noting they were still
alive, felt it couldn't have been too
bad. He told several jokes,
insisting that one of them he had
learned from Neil McGavin.
His sermon was called "God's
Faithfulness" — "The last shall be
first and the first shall be last",
taken from Matt. 20, the story of
the workers of the Vineyard.
"Grace," he said, "is the unearned
kindness, mercy and forgiveness of
God — unconditional love." The
vineyard workers complained about
the unfairness of the hiring and
paying but the Parable
demonstrates to all people that we
Fritz, who was eligible to return as
an overage, informed the club he
will not be back. Fritz did not feel
he could make the necessary
commitment because of his studies
at the University of Western
Ontario. However, a Fritz will
continue to wear number 11.
Steve's younger brother Greg has
cracked the lineup as a left winger.
The Bulls have a big crop of
newcomers and the management is
quite high on right wingers Peter
Ryter of Milverton and Jeremy
Beimes of Listowel. Bill Henry of
Teeswater and 16-year-old Mike
Hurst of Atwood should help
solidify the blueline. Goalie Scott
Walls of Clifford, another 16-year-
old, has also had a good camp.
Coach Scott Pettigrew feels with
so many rookies it will take some
time for the team to gel but he is
optimistic the Bulls will be in the
hunt for a title shot. "We don't
have the big gunners we've had the
last few seasons but we have a lot
of guys I think are going to be good
two-way players so we should be
better defensively."
Brussels will cap its exhibition
schedule Friday ,Night in
Orangeville at 7:30.
The Bulls home opener is set for
Sunday, Oct. 3 when Hanover
comes to town for a 2:00 game.

saddened
by death
The Walton community was
saddened to hear of the death of
Owen Wesley, Sept. 15. His
funeral is Sept. 20 at Saugeen
United Church Indian Reserve,
near Southampton.
Dropping in at the Walton Inn for
an ice-cream cone the Walton
correspondent learned that Karl
MacNaughton's horse, Tiger's
Flash, is doing very well on the
Fair circuit and also that Karl will
be celebrating his birthday on Sept.
29.
Happy Anniversary to Maxine
and Murray Houston on Sept. 27
and to Judy and Clint Emmrick on
Sept. 16. Randy and Patty Banks
celebrated theirs on Sept. 16 too.
Happy anniversary to John and
Ruth Uyl on Sept. 22.
The family of Doug and Marjory
Fraser held a surprise wedding
anniversary party at the couple's
home Sept. 19. Not knowing what
to expect when they left the church
(their orders were to come home
after church) they found family and
friends gathered at their place.
Happy 45th.
The Walton Public School kids
joined in the Brussels Fair parade,
some riding on a float and others
decked in aprons and chef's hats
marched behind the float.
