Council gives
parents a say
in education
By Bonnie Gropp
With the formation of an Ontario
Parent Council, the Ministry of
Education is offering the opportuni-
ty to for parents to play a greater
role in the changes and issues
which affect their child's education.
On Sept. 7 Education and Train-
ing Minister Dave Cooke
announced the formation of the
OPC. Its purpose will be as an
advisory group to the Minister,
says Regional Education Officer
Shirley Van Nuland.
"This council will give parents a
voice in the decisions that will
affect the future of their children in
education," she says.
The role of the 18 member coun-
cil will be to convey the views of
parents that will generally affect
the education of the students. Any
parent in Ontario, with a child in an
elementary or secondary school can
apply to be a member, says Ms Van
Nuland. Applications are available
at the schools and must be received
at the Regional Office by Oct. 7.
Each of the six educational
regions in Ontario will have one
member to ensure geographic
diversity, says Ms Van Nuland.
A nine-person selection commit-
tee, chaired by Ms Van Nuland will
choose applicants for appointment
by the Minister. So that it is less
intimidating for applicants, Ms Van
Nuland says the interviews for rec-
ommendation will be conducted by
three parents. The selection com-
mittee will meet Oct. 12 to select
the interviewees from the applica-
tions. The interviews for the repre-
sentative from this region will be
done Oct. 15.
The council will meet at least
five times per year .
Anyone interested in applying or
requiring more information shuld
contact their principal or the West-
ern Ontairo Regional office toll-
free at 1-800-265-4221.
