From the Minister's Study
Spiritual hunger intense
By Don Vair, Be!grave
Each of us has known what it is
to be very hungry and thirsty. We
hear our children say "I can't wait
for supper, I'm starved," even
though they ate well at lunch time.
Oh, how delicious a meal tastes
when we feel hunger pangs. Oh,
how good is a cold glass of water
on a hot day after some hard work,
a hike, or a rigorous game of
Beautiful arrangements of
autumn flowers adorned the
sanctuary of Bluevale United
Church for their anniversary
service on Sunday.
Rev. Don Robinson of Brucefield
was guest minister and Harold
Johnston greeted guests at the door.
Ushers were Lloyd Wheeler, Glen
Sellers, Paul Johnston and Ken
Mathers. Guests were present from
Bluevale Presbyterian Church, their
minister and family and Walton
and other churches.
Debbie Campbell of Seaforth
delighted the congregation with
two solos, "I Walked Today Where
Jesus Walked" and "I Asked The
Lord". The choir, with Etoile and
Mary Lou Johnston as organists
provided special music and the trio,
Carol Nicholson, Mary Lou
Johnston and Eileen Sellers sang "I
Love Him Too Much" and "I

As real as our hunger and thirst
is, it seems small when viewed
against the backdrop of those
familiar scenes of starving men,
women and children, brought
directly into our living rooms via
television.
Physical hunger and thirst are
real! If prolonged, they can result
in horrible suffering and death.
Believe in Calvary".
The children enjoyed a special
treat when Rev. Robinson brought
along his pet Angora Rabbit,
named Petunia. The children's
Hymn was "Come in, Come in and
Sit Down".
The minister chose as his sermon
"The Price of Gratitude" and
offered Prayers of Approach and
Confession and also Prayers for the
Family of God.
A social time was enjoyed
following the service and a lunch
was served in the Sunday School
rooms.

coner Funeral Homes, Blyth. The

while her sons carried their mother
to her final resting place at Blyth
Union Cemetery.
There is another type of hunger
and thirst that is even more intense,
and if not satisfied, has more tragic
results.
A man or woman may be finely
dressed and overfed, yet suffer this
kind of hunger, for it is spiritual in
nature. There is a space within each
human being that can only be filled
with nothing less than God himself,
in Jesus Christ. It is sad but true
that most people try to fill that
emptiness with everything but the
right thing, with the end result that
nothing truly satisfies.
Isaiah wrote these words in
Isaiah 55: "Ho, everyone that
thirsteth, come ye to the waters,
and he that hath no money, come
buy and eat. Yea, come buy wine
and milk without money and
without price." Why do ye spend
money for that which is not bread?
And your labour for that which
satisfieth not? Hearken diligently
unto me, and eat that which is
good, and let your soul delight
itself in fatness."
In John, chapter four, we have
the account of Jesus and the
Samaritan woman at Jacob's well.
Jesus said unto her, "Whosoever
drinketh of the water shall thirst
again, but whosoever drinketh of
the water that I shall give him shall
never thirst. But the water that I
shall give him shall be in him a
well of water springing up into
everlasting life."
In John chapter six, we hear
Jesus offering Himself as the only
food and drink to satisfy the
deepest longing of the human
spirit. Verse 35 says, "And Jesus
said unto them, I am the bread of
life. He that cometh to me shall
never hunger and he that believeth
in me shall never thirst."
In John, chapter 10, Jesus says "I
am come that they might have life
and that they might have it more
abundantly."
Are you hungering and thirsting
in the deepest depths of your inner
self? Jesus Christ who died and
rose again stands knocking at your
heart's door, longing to be invited
in.
Would you 'confess to Jesus that
you are a sinner, and open your
heart's door to Him as your
Saviour, and Lord? When He does
come in as He promised to do, you
will sing with the songwriter
"There is love and life and lasting
joy, Lord Jesus found in thee."
